As for if the model was coked out. I don't know, and don't care to know. the pro photographer shooting glamour or erotica specifically WANTS the pupils to be huge if the girl is looking into the lens.
they are psychological reasons for this, but it makes the model more alluring.
the reason for this is because all humans pupils will dilate if they look at something they like.
the "look" is accomplished on the set by keeping ambiant lighting dim and modeling lights set on low. this forces the models' pupils to open and the strobe freezes them open in the shot.
it is the mark of the pro shooter, not the amateur.

Some photographers set up their lighting in order to get large pupils on purpose. For some people that is sexy. Some photographers do it by accident because they don't know how to prevent it with their lighting. Huge pupils does not always equal "crack" or any other form of drug. Just for the record

I shoot outside so I have never run into large pupils, but looking at it from a scientific standpoint, I would think that if you shot in a very dimly lit room the models pupils would be very large. By the time the flash or flashes go off and the picture is captured I would guess that the pupils would be captured in their dilated state before they had time to react to the light. And as long as you didn't take pics to fast you would be able to keep taking shots of the models dilated pupils due to the low low lighting in the room.
Just a guess though because I have never read anything or taken any classes on the subject.

Your absolutely right. Your pupil is like a camera lens aperture. When you walk into a dimely lit room, your pupils automatically open up (become larger) in order to let in more light so your brain can interpret what your eyes are seeing. When you walk outside into the light, your pupils become smaller. Your pupils are on automatic pilot and dialate depending on how much light your brain needs to interpret and focus on what your looking at.Originally posted by BV

For all my point-n-shoot buddies out there. If your getting red-eye in your pics...it's prolly because your shooting indoors in dimely lit rooms. Best thing to do is turns some lights on or shoot outside.

I'd also like to add that it is 100% correct that the lighting can do this. If your a skilled photographer and are shooting with studio strobes rather than home depot hot lights, then the modeling lamps are only about 100watts. When those flashes go off you can be throwing as much as 2000watts or more in an instant, which gives the radial muscles than contract the iris no time to react, therefore, larger pupil.Originally posted by Tat2Jr
