    China secretly fires lasers to disable US satellites

    Check this out

    "China has secretly fired powerful laser weapons designed to disable American spy satellites by "blinding" their sensitive surveillance devices, it was reported yesterday.

    The hitherto unreported attacks have been kept secret by the Bush administration for fear that it would damage attempts to co-opt China in diplomatic offensives against North Korea and Iran."

    Is it just me or is this seriously troubling? What are they so concerned about us seeing that they'd invest in something to keep us from looking? Is this an act of war? Wouldn't it be if we did it to them? The world would be crowing "What is the US hiding?"

It's hard enough to point a ground based laser at a satellite because of atmospheric distortion but to actually disable several different multi spectural imaging devices...uuuh no not for a few years yet anyhow.

Any country can deploy a satellite anywhere they want to in space. Arms limitation treaties even include provisions for displaying the destroyed arms (missles, big bombers, etc) in plain view so orbiting satellites can photograph them. Destroying another countries satellite is no different than sinking one of their ships on the high seas.
