Two things to keep in mind.
First, these are necessarily old numbers. Polling lifetime totals for people in their 20s, 30s or 40s would be rather pointless, since they obviously have no idea what those will be yet. So, the numbers are based on past generations.
Second, lots of people are "serial daters". And while serial daters might have lots of sex, their number of sexual partners is usually fairly limited.
