Is there a reason why a lot of banners are 468 wide? I wondering started this and why. Why was it not something like 450 or 500? Then there are ads at 728 on places like Google Adsense. Why is it 728 and not 720 or 730 or 750 or something else?

It was a good size back when most screen resolutions was 640 x 480 or 800 x 600
Majority of webmasters in the online business did not notice that this screen resolution changed and spend most of their time complaining about falling revenues and lower click through percentages instead of making their banners bigger
