Quite simple really. If the search doesn't work part of the time, it may force you to look through pages and pages for the information you are looking for. Those types of searches produce more pageviews than just using the search to find what you are looking for. Therefor, when it comes time for a sponsor to renew their advertising, they can show them the numbers and say, "Hey look, the board had XX posts last month, not to mention the board had XXXXXXXXX pageviews."
Or it could be that the software hangs up in certain situations due to the large volume of past posts on this board.
Pick whichever one makes the most sense.
