Despite what you see on TV, the 9th ward (& New Orleans) was only a small portion of the area affected by Katrina. In fact, if you want to be technical about it, what happened in New Orleans was a man-made disaster, not mother nature. Had the long-known substandard levees not failed Katrina would have been solely a story about the entire central Gulf Coast.
Katrina didn't pick and choose it's victims. Entire communities for several hundred miles were devistated. Katrina made no exceptions for age, race, upper-middle-lower-class, white-collar/blue-collar, police, firemen, doctors, lawyers, congressman, senator, retail clerk....
If a tornado or earthquake took out your neighborhood would you get on GFY and smart-assedly post "gotta love good old mother nature :S"
Katrina took out my neighborhood and many surrounding, and we are talking middle and upper class neighborhoods full of productive working contributing citizens who not only lost their property but in many cases their livelyhood. Katrina turned entire previously "bustling" areas into big piles of shit. The economic and tax base loss will take some areas years to recover from and some areas will never recover to a pre-Katrina level.
Heaven forbid any of you with a flippant attitude toward the Katrina aftermath EVER have to go through what we have for the past year.

Having been born and raised in New Orleans, I can tell you these stories all ring true. There is a huge underclass in the city, it was one of the reasons I made the decision to move ( 3 years before Katrina).
I find it ironic how Spike Lee and other black activists blame whites, or Republicans, or Bush for their problems during Katrina.
But the facts are the Mayor, City Council, Police Chief, District Attorney, and every other major political office has been held by African-Americans for 25+ years.
The demise of New Orleans is very sad....

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that people simply can't see the light or pull themselves up from their bootstraps. But at the same time, I grew up with two parents. They owned their house. We didn't live in the best places but there was no violence, thugs, or pimps on my block offering me an easy alternative to a rundown school. Pride in ownership and other rudimentary mainstream values are almost alien to certain communities; it partly due to their past and explains why for example African born and Carribean born blacks are disproportionately the most successful blacks. Would I be the same person today if my only connection to mainstream values was through tv? One can't underestimate the power of environment and self-image (inferior, valueless). It's like watching those beautiful women become anorexic. You want to slap them and say "wake up! you're hot! can't you see that???". But they can't.Comment

Money sent from Mexican workers in the United States to their families back home has reached a record $12 billion in 2003, Mexican President Vicente Fox said Wednesday.
Remittances "are our biggest source of foreign income, bigger than oil, tourism or foreign investment," Fox told reporters after a meeting with Mexican-American businessmen.
"The 20 million Mexicans in the United States generate a gross product that is slightly higher than the $600 billion generated by Mexicans in Mexico," Fox said, adding that his country has the ninth-largest economy in the world.
"If we could add up the two products, Mexico would be the third or fourth economy in the world," he said.
Fox said the money transfers grew after Mexican consulates started giving identity cards to their citizens in the United States.
"The cards are working. All doubts have been cleared up," Fox said. "Almost 2.5 million people have them, and we want all Mexicans to have them."
The cards, known as "matricula consular," allow holders to get driver's licenses in some states, open bank accounts and send money home. Police have found them useful when arresting some illegal immigrants.Comment

Some of the hardest working people I have met were Black from Africa...
American Blacks have alot against them from birth. 80% grow up in a single parent household, usually not knowing their father. With the mother usually having their kids as a teen with zero life experience herself. What can she teach her child. Its the laws that allow Welfare to be a LifeStyle instead of a Safety Net. All Welfare should be Workfare, even if you just had them clean up the parks and streets in their neighborhood. It would establish alittle pride, and it is Self-Esteem and a sence of Self that the Ghetto lacks. If you woke up had a roof over your head ,alittle food in the fridge and no responsibility. Living in a Section 8 house thats owned by some White Dude that won't put a dime into the property. Who gets his check from the government. With the $ and Benefits from welfare being around 34K a year and average job available for a unskilled worked would put you into a even lower standard of living...its not as easy as saying hey get to work
