I was wondering this same thing earlier today as I was whipping up some Hamburger Helper, and was going to ask ASM.

Answer really depends on your cooking level and if you like to follow recipes or just like to read them for inspiration.

However if you really want a starting place for some of the best ones available hit http://www.cooksillustrated.com/bookstore/
All of them are fantastic and the hardbound magazine sets are killer.

I wish. One thing I do know for certain is how much I do not know and how boundless that is.

Oh donkevlar since you mentioned Japanese look for Morimoto the new art of Japanese cooking. It is a monster sized book close to 300 pages if I remember (in the kitchen). Good to read, not super hard to follow, and his food does taste incredible.

Even if you think cooking is for women or whatever and your an ultra pimp who has them cook for you. Do you actually let them around say a grill or bbq?

I am at a total beginner level at Asian cooking and just bought these two:

                            http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/188495667X
                            http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006093204X

Pretty happy with both books thus far.
Give me money & buy my links here, damn it!

Have you noticed how big Barnes and Noble is? Not all books are created equal.

I just turn to GFY when I'm looking for recipes. Trust me, I stand by my word, tis place may be full of idiots, but some of them know their fucking food. GFY always pulls through when it comes down to food...
