Technically, they wanted a "no party" system.
They felt that partisan politics was too divisive and it would be better to have an actual person's name on the ballot as opposed to voting for a party.
How ironic.
Britain's parliamentary system seems quite tame compared to the vitriolic hatred that's constantly spewed around here.
