Charles "Mask" and Danny were the owners and co founders. Danny is the character "Punk ass".
I actually know the details on who owns what, but this is not the time or the place to discuss it. I been in BJJ for 18 years and have known Charles and Danny for 12+ years.
Its been a tough day for me and a bunch of my BJJ and MMA friends.
I watched Charles leave his Job as a San Bernideno sherif to start Tap Out. These guys would live in a van for 2 weeks at a time traveling to BJJ tournaments and cage fights on Indian reservations across the USA. MMA was banned across the USA and these guys still supported what was thought to be a dying sport at the time. They sold shirts and passed out free stickers one at a time for 8 years before they started reaping the rewards for there hard work.
I remember when Charles and Danny had nothing and got offered 2 million for their company and Charles said "fuck you Tap Out is not for sale". at that time it wasn't worth shit and people thought he was stupid for not selling. He explained to me it would be like giving up his child. I didnt get it back then, but i do understand now.
The marketing of 'Tap Out" is one of the best grass roots marketing campaigns for clothing ever done. they had no money and dick for capital. Just a dream and a serious will to make Tap Out the MMA industry standard.
The way have made it, and way deserve their successes.
Charles and and Danny were the kindest nicest guys that never forgot where they came from. For the longest time they would only support American fighters, because there was no company that was backing american fighters. Hunter, Bad Boy, Krugans, Atama, and a few others were all companies. America had Tap Out.
When i used to compete, I wore HCK, Tap Out, Globe shoes, and Serial Killer (RIP Matt Macafee, owner of Serial Killer clothing)
People who know, KNOW!!
RIP Charles Lewis AKA "MASK" I and the MMA world thank you for your support
