Same thing in Mexico (up north). If you want to live in a nice area, 500k is not going to get you much. Decent homes start at 750k (if you are lucky) and 1 mil is pretty much what you need for a large home (1000+ sq meters land).
Course you could live out in the sticks, which some people do and it costs you half. One day eventually you'll have the typical shopping centers nearby, but schools, friends and family is where you'll be sacrificing for sure.

For $500k you can get a 650 sq foot 1 bedroom apt. You'd still have to pay around $1,300 per month in maintenance and taxes even after you've paid off the mortgage.

considering we live in a 2200sq ft, 3 bedroom 2.5 bath house with a 2 car garage on a .5 acre lot, and this house is going for $163k....I would say that $500k in my neighborhood would buy a fucking huge place

my house is for sale for 469,000. It is 5350sqft (including fully finished basement with full bath) I live 50 minutes west of chicago. I paid 409,000 for a condo in chicago that was 1800 sqft but equally as nice.

I see nice places (in my book) all the time being bought here, buldozed, and then a nice new 1 million dollar house built.
