actually it was the reverse paid gigs were few and far between, you had to prove yourself over and over again.
the big thing was doing the invisible hack, getting in getting good info, and eliminating all traces that you were there.
the problem is that the goal post kept moving each time you figuired out a trick to get in clean, the sys admins would figuire out how to stop it.
prove you were elite and you got paid to hack, there were a lot more mid carders guys who could get by the first revision, but didn't have the skills, intelligence, and creativity to get by the next.
And there were a lot of people that fall into the faceless masses group those that would love to be in the know and couldn't even get a single hack under their belt.
the numbers grew as you went further away from the elite.
And all those mid range guys, they were doing it only for cred, in the hopes that they would become good enough to get paid to do it.
