Obviously both elements you quoted are part of the problem and the reason the US has the government it voted for.

Only problem is this is extra money for me as I have a day job.

I'm a case and point tho, if I had stayed in the Northeast where I grew up which was farming and industrial. It was a very depressed area 20 yrs ago when I moved to a southern state and have never regretted it. Best thing I ever did.

You should never become that inflexible as to not move to where better jobs are available.

That about covers it, with the exception that the Supreme Court would be less conservative.

So unemployment is THE factor of a BOOMING economy .... LOL .... Your phone told you that ????

The economy is probably not sliding into recession, according to private and government forecasts, but it has started the transition from a heady two years of fast growth stimulated by very low interest rates to a more modest, but more normal, pace of expansion, analysts said yesterday.

"It adds up to an economy heading into a fairly significant slowdown . . . with consumers facing a lot of headwinds," said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist for Global Insight Inc., a financial analysis firm.

                    Influence on the Internet
                    [edit]

                    1999 CNN interview

On 1999-03-09, Wolf Blitzer had an interview with Gore on CNN's Late Edition. During this interview, Gore said,

During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.[6]

This quotation became the subject of heavy satire.[7] In some cases, Gore was misrepresented as having said he had "invented" the Internet rather than having "taken the initiative in creating" it,[8], and consequent arguments were made that the ARPANET pre-dated Gore's time in office.
                    [edit]

                    Cerf and Kahn response

In response to this controversy, Internet pioneers Vint Cerf and Robert E. Kahn, wrote an e-mail dated 2000-09-28, that stated:

[A]s the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time.

Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role. He said: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet." We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he "invented" the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it is timely to offer our perspective[9].

                    [edit]

                    Background: 1980s and 1990s Legislation

Al Gore was highly influenced by the 1988 report Toward a National Research Network [10] submitted to congress by a group chaired by UCLA professor of computer science, Leonard Kleinrock, one of the central creators of the ARPANET [11].

After hearing this report, Gore introduced legislation during the late 1980s known informally as the Gore Bill.[12] It was passed, however, as the High Performance Computing Act of 1991 [13] on Dec. 9, 1991 and led to the NII or National Information Infrastructure [14] which Gore referred to as the Information superhighway. Funding for the development of MOSAIC in 1993, [15] the world wide web browser which is often credited as leading to the internet boom during the mid-1990s, came from the High-Performance Computing and Communications Initiative, a program created by the High Performance Computing Act of 1991.[16]

Prior to the passage of the 1991 bill, Gore was invited to participate in the September 1991 Special Issue of Scientific American on Networks. Gore's article in this issue, Infrastructure for the Global Village joined Vint Cerf's Networks, Nicholas Negroponte's Products and Services for Computer Networks and Alan Kay's Computers, Networks and Education.[17]

In February 1993, President Clinton and Vice President Gore submitted a report, Technology for America's Economic Growth [18] which outlined the ways in which their administration planned further development of the internet by the year 2000. Gore further developed these ideas in speeches that he made at The Superhighway Summit,[19] on 1994-01-11 at Royce Hall, UCLA and for the International Telecommunications Union [20] on 1994-03-21.

A 2000-09-28, email written by Vint Cerf and Robert E. Kahn (key developers of internet protocols), stated that:

[A]s the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. You should never become that inflexible as to not move to where better jobs are available.
yeah but if everyone moved to where the jobs are, they would quickly dry up. its not a long term solution.

Again the problem with voting for who you "FEEL" is right is huge problem. Vote with your mind not your heart.
im not american. and you are right, you should vote with your mind but too many people develop this sense of being on a 'team' or something where they will pick a party and vote for them for the rest of their lives no matter what happens.

I have hated unions as far back as I can remember for numerous reasons. At one time they were a necessity, but its time for them to die like the dinosaur they are.
They got greedy and companies had no choice but to move overseas or Mexico for cheaper labor. All you have to do is look at Ford and GM. Deals they made years ago with the unions are bitin' them in the ass right now.

We would have caught Bin Laden.

We wouldn't have invaded Iraq, and since our military wouldn't be overextended there's no way in hell Iran and North Korea would be giving us grief with nuclear shit.

GDP growth would be about the same, however more of those gains would be in the pockets of the middle class instead of the upper class.
The budget would balanced. We may have had a little red ink during the recession but with tax rates still at the Clinton levels and no war in Iraq we'd be on solid fiscal footing.

I for one would have slept better at night for the last 6 years if Gore was in the White House.

yeah, sometimes the leadership is corrupt and its not a perfect system but without unions what would companies like this do? lower everyones wages? cost of living is always increasing, you can't decrease peoples wages. the whole outsourcing, moving factories to where they have lax enviromental and labor laws should be illegal. it creates a totally unfair playing ground. of course if you can pump toxins into the air and treat your workers like shit its going to be more profitable for the company.
