According to this information, domain names can typically only contain upper and lowercase letters, numbers 0-9, and the hyphen (dash) character (apart from the dots used to separate the domain/subdomain, etc). Alternate (unicode) characters can sometimes be used, but many registrars don't allow them, and most web surfers couldn't figure out how to enter them.

In short, this might be useful for a domain only visited through linking, but otherwise seems troublesome.

Regardless of what that crap says IDN names using non-standard characters will not be the next "domain wave" - seeing as most people in the wider surfing audience don't know how to produce them on demand without using something like character map.

However, the affect is achieved because typing in the copy symbol in your browser actually maps to "xn--gba" (give it a try yourself), so if you register "googlexn-gba.com" your google [copy symbol].com domain will work - but really, it's a waste of time.

Idn

Symbol domains like this are a little silly. However, IDNs have been around for years and are finally showing $$ results.

The main reason for IDN (Internationalized Domain Names) domains is to use other languages. I have several in different languages (Japanese and Russian are my best) and the adult sites are getting good traffic and conversions.

IE7 'sees' these IDNs and it will be released via autoupdate very soon. Web sites in foreign scripts are already becoming commonplace.

www. © .com & www. ® .com

Hello,

My name is Joseph Scazzola and I develop/own several domains, you may be familiar with my attempt at the classified ad market with the domain Classified.Ad . I also hold ©.com & ®.com and would like to address some of your questions.

So here is my

For a quick reference on what is an IDN or Internationalized domain name please view en.wikipedia .org/wiki/Internationalized_domain_names, this is a pretty good synopsis of what these domains are and why they are being put in place.

First, are they real?
Yes these domains are very real and functioning, if you use IE 6 and you want to see all these domains in all their glory you need to download a plug-in from IDNnow, a Verisign company, idnnow. com/index.jsp

If you are using Foxfire/Mozilla for windows then you need to adjust some security settings to get them to display naturally.

If you use Apple?s Safari then they just work, it is very cool. Apple has it going on in the R&D department.

You can register IDN?s at domainsite.com. There are only a handful of registrars that will register IDN?s, mostly because of the initial set-up of the server and the lack of interest due to not enough time in the mainstream.

Second are they valid domains?
Yes they are valid domains.

Third Why does the domain scramble?
The scrambling you are seeing when you type in the IDN and get a xn?(whatever) is the conversion of the IDN to its natural state, puny code. You should think of this like the IP address for your domain. The puny code is the unique identifier for that domain. For example ©.com translates to xn?gba.com. ®.com translates to xn?lba.com

Forth, who will type it in? Most surfers will find the Symbol IDN domain through a search engine. I would also suspect that bookmarks would be used. As for the future, I can only guess how we will surf the net, probably through a wet-link in the back of the neck.

As for an example of what these domains look like in lets say google search for "dump miner", don?t forget the double quotes, in Google and go through the first seven or eight pages, you will see a list of the IDN symbols I hold.

Forth, google©.com is not googlexn?gba.com it is xn--google-nia.com, but buying tradenames is not a real good idea, you will probably get sued if your site takes off.

Fifth, IDN symbol domains are not silly, they are part of the evolution. And yes ?The main reason for IDN (Internationalized Domain Names) domains is to use other languages.? The symbols are just a bonus.

On a personal note, I can envision that in twenty years ©.combeing the Internet?s source for copyrighting information and I can envision ®.com being the Internet?s business and trademark resources.

So those with little faith, the naysayers, the self-righteous, and the jealous, these domains are for real, they are a part of the net and are not going away. I think most of these ?they will never last? arguments will be proven wrong over time, just like ?They will never put a man on the moon!?, ?The world is FLAT!?, and so on and so on and so on and so on.

Sincerely
Joseph Scazzola

Yes, because in a world where most people run Windows straight out of the box and unconfgured, they are going to be able to memorise the ALT code to produce a copyright symbol much faster than they will be able to just smack in "copyright.com"...

testpie, are you just jealous or bitter? Let me put it in a words that you can understand.

Internet grow, me be very rich soon. (I can be sarcastic too.)

Also copyright is an english word. Or do you want to argue that it is Japanese (which is 版権, just for future reference)
? is a symbol recognized around the world to mean copyrighted material.
Are you starting to get it?

I am outta here, later.

I'm neither jealous nor bitter - i'm realistic. Unfortunately the likes of me have seen the dot com boom and the "this will revolutionise XYZ" schemes all before - and shockingly enough, aren't likely to fall for them again.

I could of course be wrong, but frankly i don't see a domain that consists of a special character being the next bandwagon. And if this is really "the future of entertainment on the web", i can't help but feel it looks a little blank...

You are truly a whiney, whiney, close-minded person.

If you want to talk about a different domain that I am developing I can talk about that. Yes I have plans for UENet, but what does that have to do with IDN symbol domains? I don't see the connection.

Lets keep to the topic. What "Scheme" am I trying to get you in on? What special symbol IDN bandwagon are you talking about? Sounds like you are just feeling a bit stupid because you don't know what you are talking about, but desperately want to be the expert. No one is trying to sell you anything, the question that was asked at this form was about IDN symbols, remember? Being that I have a bunch of them I thought I would let you know what information I have. Take it or leave it. I am pro IDN.

I suspect that "blank" feeling you have doesn't has anything to do with UENet but is actually caused be the absence of any common sense you may have had in the past.

Sigh. Don't forget to add in the part where you say "Oh, and don't forget - you'll die one day too". Why would i want to talk about a different domain you are developing?

Seeing as i am apparently an idiot (yes i know, as you could have said, i'll die one day), the bandwagon i am referring to is:

Nope - that's definately not any kind of sales speak or incentive for me to jump on a bandwagon. Seems like standard non-persuasive language to me...

Indeed, the question was about such IDN domains - so does that mean i can't comment on my opinion on them? Thanks for your idea of a fascist system - afraid i won't be subscribing to it.

It must pain you inside to have to resort to baseless insults to try and cover up for the fact that you just got owned.

Dear BitterPie

It is becoming very obvious that you have some real serious emotional issues to deal with. You may want to consider getting some professional help or at least someone you can talk to that you trust. Now I am not a doctor, but I would suggest that you take your Ritalin or whatever mood altering drug you are on and get some sleep. You are obviously very upset, very, very upset.

Oooooh snap, with a double pop, you just got sent through the ringer and put away wet. School is out of session.

Thanks for captilising the faux-name you came up with. As for saying i have serious emotional issues - perhaps, but why is it that you are now the one stearing the conversation away from IDN's and into a personal battle? Can you not stand to take criticism on your IDN's?

If you'd like to try convincing me that symbol IDNs (those which are made of special characters, such as the copyright symbol, and not those which are simply in another language) are of any worth when the average surfer cannot even replicate said symbol without having copied and pasted it from somewhere else first, then go ahead; you've failed so far.

EDIT: By the way, kudos on the double post to try and re-inforce your pointless insult. You really showed me up with those kind of pre-school tactics...

Sincerely
Joseph Scazzola

thanks for a very interesting post..
I really dont have much of an opinion yea or nea on the subject as it's something I'm just learning about..but on the surface..I CAN see it as being viable for bookmarked, link lists and SE results.
If you own the .com version of a domain..seems like it could be beneficial to own the ©.com version as well.

The copyright symbol is not on any major country keyboard, and Testpie is right, you would need to ask the viewer to type in the ALT code or else the punycode to resolve this domain.

Both of those options are very poor, and unless the copyright symbol suddenly finds it's way on to the world's keyboards, development prospects are virtually non-existent.

That said, the domain ought to show up in search results and if it can be optimised for the search term 'copyright' then there will be a natural association there (not to mention unusual curiousity factor) and the name could do well through link traffic...

Oh, and I would NEVER advocate someone regging <whatever TM>©.com. The google domain for e.g. is ridiculous, and if it were ever promoted and taken seriously, would land you in court faster than a 'ferret up a drainpipe'.
