I believe Materazzi is saying this now as damage control. I have to believe that the insults he directed at Zidane were a bit more harsh than what he is claiming.

Beyond that, Zidane should have kept his head no matter what his opponent said, recognizing that it was simply a tactic to get him riled up. Trash talk is nothing new in sports.

Then, if Zidane still felt he had a score to settle, he could have done so after the game, which likely would have resulted in assault charges instead of a red card.

I really never understood how those guys communicate. I mean, one speaks french and the other one italian. On top of that, the refs are from other countries.

Well, obviously I wasn't only referring to this case. A lot of international matches have a lot of chatter. I could never figure out how they can go back and forth, specially when they talk to japanese refs or whatever.

Yes, I would like to hear Zidane's response to this before I accept it as true as from what I heard from someone in the BBC jouralist's circles it was something far worse to do with one of Zidane's close relatives who is suffering from cancer.

What happen during the play its another story, mazzerati probably insult zidane about mother, sister, terrorist, family - whatever.... must have be very strong words...

What have done zidane is bad, but have in mind : this guy is playing a final against italy after several weeks of hard playing in world cup, its his last one, he was close to do another goal, its extended time, his mother at hospital, italians players on him during all the play especially mazzerati... i think we can give him some credits ;-)
