Canadians, anyone buy and drive back a car from the USA?

anyone know what you have to do to go about this? or who you should phone to find out info of bringing a vehicle back across the boarder?

the cars are much much cheaper and in most states in 100x better shape, anyone done this or have any info/advice?

    thanks in advance.

I think they nail you with taxes when you cross, so it really isn't all that cheap. They also have differant pollution control standards so it may be a problem trying to pass the car through air care

thanks man, i have heard from some people that you just have to pay canadian GST when crossing the boarder but i really do not know if that is even 1% true.

i had a car shipped from Cincinnati to Vancouver last year.
            you will pay GST
you will pay PST, although i think you are in Alberta.
you will pay 100.00 for air conditioning tax.
you will pay for the provincial and federal safety inspection, plus adding daylight running lights etc..
there are some other small fees as well, to do with the paperwork.
            thats it..
            i use Vacares...so should you

awesome, thanks for all the info shemp, i appreciate it, i think it will be my best bet driving a car back, the car i am looking at is very hard to find in canada.

i am in alberta so that is good, also i may buy it in minneapolis because ia m pretty sure that there is no GST in that city. *i know there is none of regular purchases not 100% sure about cars.

was it worth it for you?
did it save you alot of money?

you will pay the GST to canada customs when you import the car. it will be 6% of the cost of the vehicle (converted to C$) you should save money, i saved about 6K on my deal...

oh ya, you should check first with Transport Canada to see if the vehicle is eligible for importing (most are) also, you will need a letter from the manufacturer stating that all recalls (if any) have been completed..

I do this with wrecked cars and have them towed up.

Its not THAT much cheaper, and most of the cars are way higher mileage (at least compared to vancouver).

                            Cost of car
                            + exchange rate
+ 6% duty if its not US built
+ 6% GST on top of the duty (yes, a tax on a tax. only in canada...)
                            + 7% PST (BC)
                            + $280 to RIV
                            + $80-$100 Provincial Inspection
+ Transport to pick up the car
                            + Transport back
+ Temporary permits to drive the car back
+ Temp permits to drive the car to the inspections
+ Installation of daytime running lights (I do this myself)
+ The cars are absolutely NOT in better shape...

Evo's aren't on the approved car list. I think it has to do with the bumper not meeting crash standards.

I nearly imported my STi up to Canada because after working out all taxes, fee's etc I would have saved $6k on a new purchase. If I had went with the Legacy, I would have saved closer to $10k... because the Legacy is pieced together in Indiana, it's considered a US built car and falls under free trade blah blah so less tax at the border...

There is this funny little concept called 'Free Trade' that Canada and the USA has going on. Look it up.

Wow, good question since I wanted to do the same thing cuz cars are SOOO much cheaper down there.
What if I bought a brand new car? Will it still need to get safety inspected, etc? I live outside of the city so it won't require aircare but will they still make me pay a fee?

Evo you cant bring in because it doesn't meet canadian safety standards. You can bring in a normal lancer though. The list of cars is on RIV.CA

If its a brand new car, you still have to get it safety inspected and have daytime running lights installed. You don't have to do aircare the first year the car is registered here.

Maja, since you live in the interior, You will have to do both those inspections but wont have to do aircare ever.

Oh one more thing I missed, if you get a salvage car, even if it doesn't have any damage (was written off, then fixed and reregistered in the states), you also have to get a structural integrity test (about $100) and a 4 wheel alignment.

I tell ya, they anal you at every turn in this country...
