the CLK is nice but the same 6.3 in the CLS and E class makes over 500 hp.. the torque numbers did drop compared to the kompressor engines in the 55..Comment

Merc automatics use torque converters. Basically a box that filters the power from the engine to the wheels. Torque converters also have the power to switch gears for you, which means that even if you want to drop to 2nd and run it all the way to the rev limit, it will select 3rd anytime it wants to, which means you lose speed.
That doesn't happen with the SMG's. They run straight up to redline before shifting. Basically they let you decide if you want to change sooner, but if you don't, it'll just go as far as it can.Comment
