I frequent the mainstream boards pretty often and on the topics of forums one of the issues is getting initial interest and enough members to post before it really just takes off by itself. Any tips for new forum owners?

If you have a solid readership in form of a blog, you can feed in traffic pretty easily. And if you have a pretty enthusiastic crowd, you can achieve quite the amount of contributions...

Very nice... forums and the like make very good sites as far as AdSense goes... I just AdSense'd my most popular forum... a single text ad at the bottom of the page (damn near hidden) is making me $100 a month. That prompted me to start a redesign of the whole site so that I could put the ads in optimal placement... I'd love to get it to where its making $500 a month without any babysitting... once you get a site like that... youre made cause all you have to do is rinse, repeat and next thing you know you have a nice income and you're not doing a damn thing other than a weekly bank run.

Or you do don't rinse and repeat but work with what you got and then bank 5 figures a month. An excellent how-to on forum integration is posted here. Modify it to your own liking.

I have a bunch of volunteer mods. Pay them? Nah, they are doing a great job as is, they are happy to have the colored nickname and being given some authoritaaaaay. I eventually may pay someone, but for now, there is plenty of addicted volunteers that'll do it for free.

Sadly, I am too enthusiastic about the success it's having, so I spend quite a bit of time improving the forum to my member's liking. Sure, I could let it just float away and do its thing, but then surely the stats and income graphs wouldn't look the way they look. As my dad used to say "without work there's no bread buns".
