I've seen shit like that happen from a nitrous backfire... that's where nitrous oxide and fuel pools up in the intake manifold and then gets ignited. It only happens when the engine is running though, or being cranked. The intake manifold ends up fragging and taking out the hood. Not quite as dramatic as in the pics though...
