MB are great like that. I sorely miss mine.shenanigans!
the motor blew up out the top and the windshield is still intact? the front end is still perfect? nothing caught fire? there's no soot, no mess/damage from the fire department.
where's the link to the news story? certainly if a car blows up in a best buy parking lot, the store is evacuated, etc, the news would be ALL over it. just like the car in memphis that actually did blow up recently-uno

yes, i enjoyed mine as well and it was an overall great car.
and my apology to the OP if i was wrong about this but i've never seen a car fire without collateral damage- especially one started by fuel, as opposed to an electrical fire, etc.
the fuel line going into the manifold is low pressure so it won't spray a shitload of gas everywhere, and what gas is sprayed, will ignite, land on flammable bits under the hood, like plastic, rubber, etc etc and catch all of that on fire. i can't see any damage to the car other than the popped hood. I've seen a few cars fires in my day and it's a mess afterwards. soot from the fire everywhere also.Comment

Where do you get low pressure from? Its not a carburetor. Its fuel injected. On average there is at least 40 psi at the fuel rail. That WILL spray out as a vapor if there is a small leak or a pinhole, or an injector isn't seated right. I think a lot of people are thinking hoods are stronger than they are. The strongest parts of the hood are the infrastructure. Thats the part of the hood below the initial top layer of sheet metal that you see from the outside. Im guessing Joe will tell us that most of the underlying frame was still intact, and that the part that is flipped up is the top sheet of the hood that peeled away.yes, i enjoyed mine as well and it was an overall great car.

it doesn't matter. the fuel pump could be low pressure or otherwise, regardless of being injected or not. besides, let's assume it was 30-40 psi, it would of blown ignited fuel everywhere under the hood, catching rubber, plastic and other burnable bits on fire, but those pictures show no fire damage.Comment

I've seen shit like that happen from a nitrous backfire... that's where nitrous oxide and fuel pools up in the intake manifold and then gets ignited. It only happens when the engine is running though, or being cranked. The intake manifold ends up fragging and taking out the hood. Not quite as dramatic as in the pics though...Cary | AIM: cheesefrog | ICQ: 4287002Comment

an explosion with enough force to blow a whole like that through a hood, could easily pack enough punch to suffocate itself or the majority of its own flames...it doesn't matter. the fuel pump could be low pressure or otherwise, regardless of being injected or not. besides, let's assume it was 30-40 psi, it would of blown ignited fuel everywhere under the hood, catching rubber, plastic and other burnable bits on fire, but those pictures show no fire damage.Comment

Holy shit dude...

My dad's corvette back in the day that did the same thing. Not nearly as big of an explosion though. That really sucks.Comment

Not sure how in the hell you would see fire damage from a flash ignition from fuel vapor. Just because there was a leak doesn't mean that the fire would go back through the fuel lines and catch anything else on fire. Read up on fuel vapor. There didn't even have to be a leak that was squirting out after the car was off. Could of been a smaller pool of fuel that accumulated under the intake manifold and got just enough of a spark of the exhaust manifold in order to ignite. When in a sealed area a fire will flash burn, and actually put itself out after the flash if there is no more fuel to burn. An injector leaking could do that easily and wouldn't allow a stream of fuel to actually be there after the fuel pump shut off. There is also the chance that the fuel line pressure valve could of leaked too. For those that don't know there is a schrader valve very similar to a tire valve on the fuel rail where fuel line pressure is checked.it doesn't matter. the fuel pump could be low pressure or otherwise, regardless of being injected or not. besides, let's assume it was 30-40 psi, it would of blown ignited fuel everywhere under the hood, catching rubber, plastic and other burnable bits on fire, but those pictures show no fire damage.
The other thing that could be possible would be the A/C system can build enough pressure and blow if there is a blockage and the compressor keeps pumping pressure through the system, the condenser or one the lines could blow, and possibly be ignited.
Anyways this obviously wasn't a bomb. It was either fuel igniting or something else that blew the top layer of sheet metal out like a jiffy pop popcorn container.Comment

relax there, hot shot. you have your view, i have mine. you can play captain save a ho all you want but the bottomline is you are guessing about this just as much as i am.Comment

Well I have a pretty educated guess as I worked in the automotive field for 13 years, and have been working on cars since I was old enough to hold a wrench. So not sure what that has to do with saving a ho, but ya. If there is no other combustible matter, and there is fuel vapor and it ignites, it goes flash, boom. The pressure from the combustion goes poof and makes all the air around it expand. As said by another above essentially putting it self out within seconds. Of course Im sure someone could of jimmied the hood and put a small c4 charge and waited for the opportune moment as Joe went into best buy to detonate it. Cue the music from 24, and call in Jack Bower. Sheesh lolComment
