Also setup a Skype account and buy a cheap USB phone from eBay. Use that to make most of your long calls home!

Great link and info. Another option is unlocked gsm phones and local (European) sim cards or world sim cards.

Here are some more links for those looking for options. This is what I do when I go abroad for business. The benefits to this are that incoming calls & incoming txt & sms are free with some of the cards.

most of these GSMs are unlocked, if not any 2 dollar shop can do that for like $10 if its a wellknown brand

BUT remember if youre gonna take this cellphone back to the US it wont work - differenct frequency different voltage

so whatever you do CHECK if your adapter accepts 230AC otherwise youre in for a surprise

Skype is nice too but not everyone has a laptop 24/7, these cheapass phones are on sale everywhere theyre all 35-50

I know it does sound cheapass, but some providers charge 2+ bucks a min for roaming. Data is worse, if you use your blueberry or hiptop here roaming on a dutch network theyll charge $25-30 per 500kb, so no gfy browsing new hotties
