Hmm I loved him in both Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and in Blow as well.
Johnny Depp is a terrific actor it's just the first time he got a somewhat mainstream likeable role so simple people like you can appriciate him as well

If I recall correctly contracts were signed by Depp, Bloom, and Knightly just following the release of the first film for both the 2nd and 3rd installments.
