Just wondering, do these goth kids I see on the streets use some kind of makeup to make their skin so pale or do they just do whatever they can to avoid sunlight?

emo is a style of music, since i've never really been able to explain it fully myself even, i ganked this from urbandictionary.com -
"In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo.""
"Emo is Punk music on estrogen. Often acoustic guitar with soft, high male vocals that dwell exessively on the singer's feelings, especially melancholy remembrances of past relationships/mistakes in life...The music has also spawned a subculture which conforms to certain conventions in dress such as tight sweatshirts, tight band T-shirts and horn-rim glasses. Adherents profess to exessively melancholy temperments. Males that adhere to the emo subculture are sometimes confused with metrosexuals; indeed the line between the two is somwhat blurred, though both groups claim to be intouch with their emotional side. The ephemeral and hackneyed nature of emo songwriting suggests that its audience will be restricted largely to teenagers. the genre suffers from a lack of credibility outside the aforementioned demographic group, much like current Nu Metal bands."
goth is also a style of music that yielded a fasion subculture.
goth was originally a term used to describe people with a taste for certain bands eg: Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, etc. in the '80s when punk started to fade out, and with wardrobes predominantly black.
more ganked from ub.com since i'm too lazy to write it out myself right now:
"Real goths are not depressing and suicidal like the posers you see at Hot Topic. Goths are fun to be around and aren't afraid to laugh at themselves every so often. They don't worship Satan and aren't evil despite what some ignorant people might say. Goths don't all dress alike either. They like to create their own unique style. Goths are also very intelligent and creative. A lot of them are writers and artists. Goths DON'T envy the popular people. They are what they are because it makes them happy. Goths would rather stay who they are and be among the so called "freaks" than be like everyone else and be popular. They understand that there are more important things in life than popularity, and usually succeed in life while the popular ones don't become much of anything."
so in response to baddog's original question - "goths" probably put powder on their face that is lighter than their intended skintone, and/or live in places like seattle and don't go to tanning beds. i lived there for college and people called me "goth" simply because i wasn't fucking tan and i liked to wear black. and black eyeliner. and black lipstick. i don't *think* i was goth ever but sticking to one's own style and not giving a rat's ass about what anyone else thinks? now *that's* my 'style' so to speak.

p.s. that's wrong and any woman will tell you so...at least any women who's into looking good in a bikini - a black bikini makes your skin look darker, whereas a white bikini (total absence of colour) makes you look more pale.Originally posted by BCyberAnyone wearing all black clothes, black hair and any makeup or anything is gonna look whiter.

most of them are not out in the daytime a lot - except the ones that still go to school
but i think most of them use a combination of skin whitners (which by the way many of them contain dangerous products, which with prolonged use can send me you nuts [mad-hatters' disease]) and makeupComment

I disagree with that. I look way more tan wearing a white shirt than I do a black one. Skimpy bikinis out in the sun might have a different affect though.icq 156131086Comment

we'll have to agree to disagre then. i find a white bikini just adds to the obvious lack of tan one might have. but then, being tan doesn't have much to do with being goth or this thread eh? sorry baddog! heheOriginally posted by BCyberI disagree with that. No, but people associate them. When most people think of goth people, the first thing that comes to your mind is pale ass white skin with all black clothes and whatever else.Originally posted by tASSy

I think you got it backwards, no bathing suit makes you look tanner than white does.Originally posted by tASSy

actually, depending on gender...
its partly makeup and partly lack of sunlight. There is a line of makeup called morbid makeup which is just a nearlly white non translucent white makeup that not ivory white. Many mainstream makeup company's have very fair skinned tones for redheads and platinum blondes that are often used.
AFI is kinda emo but mainly bubblegum punk... and DEFINATLY not goth... manson and NIN are not goth... (There industrial)Comment

"The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture prevalent in many countries. It began in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s to early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature, mainly through horror movies."

Because all I see on the streets walking around in all black, with obviously dyed black hair, black lipstick, and what I hope is white makeup is kids.Originally posted by AmeliaGUhm, what Tassy said. Except I'd like to pose the following question: Why would you append the word "kids" to describing one subculture over another?
Funny though, they never seem to want to make eye contact with anyone. Guess it is because they know they look a little "odd."Comment

I cannot speak for Goth, as that was after my time, but before that there was Death Rock, and it's basically the same thing. Back in the Death Rock days, we stayed out of the sun, wearing long sleeves even when it was boiling out (which we still laugh about). We used Porcelana religiously to keep us not only pale, but also freckle-free. My boyfriend constantly remarks about how much he loves my freckles, but back then it was the worst thing in the world. My white makeup looked terrible with the dreaded freckles. So yeah, it's both: staying out of the sun, and makeup. But it's also Porcelana. It bleaches your skin.
Goth, emo, and whatever else, I cannot keep it all straight anymore. My kids are constantly trying to explain scene kids, hardcore dancing, etc. to me. It's like trying to keep track of the fifty different levels of metal. I think it only matters if you are younger than sixteen.Comment

I don't usually check someone's ID unless I'm planning on taking naked pictures of their pale nude body. How do you know how old they are?Comment
