Thanks for sharing this thread Bruno. Let me share my views:

I have worked with almost all type of designers and coders and in the end, there are only two models I can say that work for me: (1) hiring one man and having him working just for me (2) hiring a professional & competent company. Both of them are like the same in the end.

With (1) you pay less money for the result, but you spend a lot of time and energy hiring, teaching, giving instructions that sometimes they don't get it, dealing with their life problems and you can end 1 month with nothing done. Luckily you will make him learn/understand and future work will be done like you want to and fast or maybe you'll need to fire him and start all over again.

With (2) you save all that shitty part of (1) because you TRANSFER all the shit to the decent company you are hiring, and don't think they will do that shitty work for free. They must and will charge you for that. People that say they charge a lot simply has no idea about this issues.

My most common problems with "1-artist companies" are:

    - the artist thinks he is the best of the world while you know he is not
    - he is very unprofessional (as most artists are anyway)
    - even though you know it takes him 1 day to do your task he will delay several weeks, you'll try contacting him and he will ignore even though he said it would be done in that same day/week
    - you ask for changes and he feel insulted as he think the result is perfect (as most artists do anyway)

The list goes on and on. There may be a couple of guys that aren't like this, but I had no luck finding them and I am pretty sure they won't be as cheap as the regular "1-artist companies" are.

      That's 100% spot on.

I recentely went with them and shelled out about 6x the money an avarage designer charges. Althogh I finally got them to make the design I wanted, the whole experince was a nightmare.

      DickmansDesign. Never again.

We are a generously sized company, but very compact, lean and efficient. We have even dropped most of our development jobs, as they were creating more layers that were turning us into a more expensive operation. In the future we plan to drop it completely and only do what we do best: consulting, branding & high end design.

At the same time, we're based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of the most expensive cities on the planet, and fortunately abundant with talent and creativity. The Brazilian design & advertising industries have worldwide recognition and most, if not all of the big ad conglomerates, have operations here. That means we fight with giants such as BBDO, DDB and Ogilvy for talent. We hire the best, so we have to pay accordingly.

Now, regarding the conversions, I wouldnt believe that the companies choose and stick with us out of hype. They have smart, ROI conscious decision makers, and are with us because we created what they want, and also what they need. Some companies get fancy sites from us, some get simpler looking sites from us, but all of them are created with performance in mind. Ask our clients. My guess is they would be happy to share the good word.

It's great when there's trust and creative freedom. We are able to deliver quickly what we believe works for that situation and thus we charge less than we charge on projects that demand intensive labour. We're known for the sites that really are big standouts, because we're one of the few companies making such tours, but we design tons of sites that are not as expensive and unique, but deliver the desired results for that particular situation. ALL of our projects are done with the very same line of thought: we like to say that at Dickmans Passion Meets Performance.

At the same time, you're unable to have the very best expert in each of the facets of the design business. Here we have account managers who know tons about the needs of our clients and are great project managers.. we have planners and information architects who are always thinking about whats next but also about what works... we have concept artists who are creative and add tons of quality and wow effect to our work and we have production guys who are fast and efficient. Everything is done in house.

        Also, we have the scale.
We're able to deliver tons of projects to our large clients, at the pace they need. It's actually never the pace they need! lol They are some very hungry fellas! But we do our best!
I tried to take what Bruno has written in his courteous and professional responses then highlight what I feel are the MAIN reasons why DickmansDesign is worth what you pay.

Having know Bruno for over three years now I have observed first hand what he and his company have done to raise the bar when it comes to adult design in terms of the quality of his company's work and the level of professionalism he personally brings to the table.

Keep on pushing the boundaries and leading the way Bruno

The first rough concept you showed me I liked - in general, the colors and style. At that point I should have been more direct and told you that there was a flaw in it that would never be overcome - but I wanted to see it more fleshed out to be sure. The 'fleshing out' of the concept just made it worse. The reason I began to 'over direct' is that what I was getting from you after the original first draft which i thought was pretty good was pretty blah - so I gave u suggestions to see if it would add something to the design.

I wish designers would actually use rough pencil and paper sketches - I don't need to see a completely rendered design to see if something is going to work out or not. because I know you have a business to run and can't spend unlimited hours per project.

It's true, I can be a control freak when it comes to design - but only when I can see that things aren't working out well and things weren't coming together well on this one.

oh well - as I said, Dickmans does some amazing work - i only said what was true for me. The overdirection has *some* validity.
can we see the design that dickman made for you?

OMG - The design is absolutely amazing. It is SO striking. I can't wait to be able to show it off publicly.... and Johnny has been great.

YMMV, but here's my experience with Dickmans -
My ratios with Dickman tours are so much better then the tours I've had done for 1/4 to 1/2 the price that I have no choice but to pay the price. Of course I love having a tour that I really like (which Dickman always delivers for me), but in the end the numbers are all that matters, and they don't lie. They consistently beat my own designs and other designer's tours. We are a small company with only 2 people doing all the work (including shooting ALL the content for 3 current sites and 4 sites that are in the works) and limited working capital. If I could get the same results by paying less I would.

Is that someone I should recognize from a design perspective or are you saying the thread was started by a Dickman's sock puppet? Not that it would change Dickman's quality either way, just curious.

                  I take it youre devine???

and if so... no... you asked if he/she read the thread... i assume you meant this by what he said as in ifit were he had not read the thread and replied incoherently or something ...

but he was asking for an update on the findings mutt may or may not have had from the "dumpster"...

so i said what i said to reflect the fact that he in fact made sense and was also the thread starter...

i am slightly inebriated at the moment so i may be wrong... but thats how i see it at the moment... ?QW?Q?Q?!!
