Some models have a program installed that checks to see if the battery is a genuine sony battery, forcing users to only buy inflated sony products.

The display on my vaio used to cut out, leaving an all single colored picture on the screen. Hard rebooting fixed it, but was a pain because you can't see the screen to save any work first. Luckily though, the display hasn't done this in a few months. And when it did cut out, it was about 1-2 times/month.
Other than the shady sony programs and display cutting out occasionally, vaios aren't too bad and they do look pretty nice. They might not be worth paying retail price for, but they sure are worth shooting for on the 'win a free laptop' sites.
