You said it yourself: standard 3 series. All the M-models are always lighter than their standard counterparts. The standard cars use mostly a steel alloy construction. It's cheaper and easier to make. The M-models are built at the BMW M motorsport division in Germany, because the aluminum construction needs quite a bit more TLC to build.Originally posted by CheeseFrog

I like the Z06 too, but it's just a wee bit showy for my tastes. I prefer sleeper cars that go faster than they look, like the Maserati Quattroporte, or the CSL M3's.
