this thread brings back some good memories of the 80's. I had 2 boards back in the day, and I still have them. I remember learning to skateboard when I was around 3 or 4, before I could even ride a bike. good times, good times.

I had a Sims board, black kryptonics, wide independents, vans and no skid blocks....ages ago..
now at 42yo I still can do most of the tricks ;-)

I had them all at one time or another... but my fav was a Blockhead Sam Cunningham deck because it had a fat nose and a little kick in the tail that was great for some extra control.

I was a SERIOUS skater for a long time.

                    Ahhh yes.. A Block Head.....

Yepp. That was late 80's for me.....

In fact out of all my boards, the Blockhead is the only one I still have sitting in the basement at my mom's place.

I believe its the Jim Gray Blockhead...

                    I liked it.

I know it would take a while to get at your parents etc and to scan em.

BTW... last year I went out back with the board when I heard some tail pops from some kids in the parking lot behind me house.

I had not been on my board in YEARS.

Rolled up, the kids gave me "that look" like I did not belong.

A few kickflips later along with some old school smooth as butter slappy smith grinds on a curb, I had their respect.

The took me to some spots, I think just to see what this old timer had in him.

Frontside and backside wall rides. Nailed them. Several kick flip tricks, airwalk, tail slides... perfect.

Then I saw one of the kids ollie up and do some sort of a shove-it nose slide down a hand rail about 5 steps long. No problem I though, I used to slide down handrails in my sleep.

I rolled up to it, POP... bailed. Try #2... rolled up, POP... bailed. I was thinking for sure I was never going to feel this incredible rush again.

Roll up, POP... smooth as butter.

Now I'm one of the kids. Still with some old school tricks, and some were a bit sketchy, but I was able to hang onto most.

After an hour or so I was feeling good, almost like old times but a little more winded and my shins were starting to hurt. I thought I would nail a frontside rail slide and call it a day.

Rolled up, POP... onto the rail... by board just stopped. I feel backwards and BUSTED MY FUCKING ASS harder than I have ever busted my ass before.

I don't remember the pavement being so hard. It really fucking hurt. It knocked the wind out of me and I was on the groud for about 20 minutes while the kids were sure I broke something. Nothing was broken but my pride.

I limped home, in too much pain to even skate.

That was the last time I got on a skateboard.

Man you guys had it made.

I was riding back in the 70s and back then you didn't have the equipment choices you did in the 80s and beyond. You know where we got our boards, we made them ourselves in shop class. Urethane wheels and tracker trucks came along and changed everything. I think cadillac wheels were the first to come out. All that new grip changed the way we could ride.

Then came the skate parks. I can remember going to the " Paved Wave " in Cocoa Fl. and riding the place in bare feet, no pads or helmet. It's come a looooong way since then but it was still fun back in the day.

I've got some pics I just need to dig them up first.

Awsome fucking story........ I can feel that one.

Its almost like the old boxer, the ex champ, the master of the ring stepping back in to show the kids he still has it. To show that he was once the man, while those kids were in diapers you were ripping it up..

Show flashes of brillance, then take a fall.. A hard fall.

But its the ego that is hurt the most.

Dude, ya gotta get back out there sometime.

Here is a pic of me at the " Paved Wave " skate park in Cocoa Fl. I'd say this was about 1977. I made the board myself and it's got cadillac wheels. Around this time the new thing were those plastic boards that could flex which later led to the stronger laminate boards.

Paved wave was one of if not the first skate park in Florida and people came from all over to skate there. It had a high concrete ramp that you used to drop into a big bowl which I'm at here. Then it turned into a series of left and right banks and then a flat area which ended at the foot of the stairs to go up to the ramp again.

You can see by the pictures that no protection was required and I don't think they made much for skating back then anyways. Also notice there is no coping on the top of the bowl as nobody has even thought about using the lip yet. That came about later when everyone started skating in empty swimming pools and discovered the use of the coping.

It's pretty amazing to think back to those times and how we thought we were on the cutting edge and then to watch the recent Xgames and see just how far it's come.

All I can say now is I'm really starting to feel old

Yea that was my favorite board that and Mike McGill's.. I used to have my own half pipe in my back yard and the whole nine yards. A friend of mine had Mark Lake's metal half pipe in his back yard. That thing was insane Lake skateboard company was based in my home town I dunno if they are still around or not though.

I dislocated my elbow showing off for some girls on a ramp and had to have two surgery's on it.. That ended my skating days.

Indeed. I was a skater in the mid-70's as well. Myself and a few kids on my street all bought these yellow banana boards and started practising, and before we knew it every kid in the area was riding one type of board or another.

And no equipment. I still carry scars from my handful of legendary wipeouts on cement.

                                                      Good times.

I Think the paved wave was on SR520 in Cocoa or maybe merritt island. If I remember it was only open a few years and then closed because of fear of lawsuits and back then nobody would insure something like that. I could be wrong though. It's been a long time.

Ahh ok yea that's what sucked about skating when I was growing up in that area.. There were no parks and no place you could skate publicly. We used to have to build our own ramps in the woods or behind our houses. That or go skate behind some shopping mall on their loading docks or something like that.

A skate park would have been a dream back then.

Indeed. I was a skater in the mid-70's as well. Myself and a few kids on my street all bought these yellow banana boards and started practising, and before we knew it every kid in the area was riding one type of board or another.

And no equipment. I still carry scars from my handful of legendary wipeouts on cement.

Yes, a lot of us had the itch for a while, several years in the 70's in fact, but we were also caught up in our other sports, especially hockey. Only a handful of kids actually got good at stakeboarding, and when the city built a little cement curvy skate bowl thingy near the local arena no one really knew what to do with it. ha ha.... there it sat, empty for the most part.

As you can see from my first pic things have been progressing. Riders have protection and the bowls now all have edges built for grinding.

A lot of riders wore gloves as the big moves then were low sweeping slide turns and you used your hand to pivot. Up until then everyone was just doing kick turns off the banks and stuff and then somebody decided to take to the air.

This picture here is of some rider pushing the limits and taking to the air when most people were just seeing how high they could kick turn on the ramp. Getting air was just beginning then and NOBODY even dreamed that some day a skater would jump the great wall of China. I used to have slide show parties back then and this pic always got a big hoot. Now it's just a little piece of history.

Anyway, man... the Bones Brigade is what really got me started. I loved the style of Caballero and Guerrero (The Gonz was another favorite). Plus, watching Tony Hawk even back then was awesome. But to this day, I don't think anyone impresses me more on flatland or street tricks than Rodney Mullen. Here's a video from youtube -> http://youtube.com/watch?v=PcbCCFb0zXI

For hours every day/night, my friends and I would do tricks off the "launch ramp". Things like Judo's, Madonna's, 360's, Method Air (with a tweak, of course). Then we'd just go hit the spots, grind some curbs, slide some railings, kickflip ollie's, shove-it's, etc... man, those were the times.

I bet if I stepped on a board right now, I'd break two things... the board and my ass.

I was more of a street skater back then, I never really got into the whole half pipe craze.

I guess I'm going to have to start digging out all this stuff

My 2 boyfriends in high school were skaters, when they outlawed it in the town I grew up in (no joke) we spent the entire summer running from cops and sliding under cars to hide. Living a life of crime for skating, ridiculous! The yuppies said they were pissed off at the "marks they leave on the curbs and railings"

It's great to see all the kids in the skate parks they have in Vegas!

Holy crap man.. where were all these parks when I was growing up in that area? Damn we got jipped because there was nothing around in the mid to late 80's.I would have killed to have a place like that to skate at when I was a kid.

He is the guy who taught me how to ollie. I went from hardly being able to ollie over another skateboard to oillieing over park benches. He would always bring decks, shirts and stickers for all of us kids every time he came. What a cool fucking guy he was.
