would need more information to figure out how this came about, I doubt she wrote a letter saying "I'm an illegal, so that is why you should let me in"... the school itself may have felt sorry for her as part of it (and somebody probably pushed her in the direction toward that program, thought they were doing her a favor I'm sure), but you sure are generalizing when you say "another brown face with their hand out"..... EVERY immigrant I've run across wants to work, many will work two jobs if you give them the chance, and they work hard and are grateful for the pay
this girl seems a bit out of the ordinary because generally speaking, Mexican culture is very strong family ties, so she may even be in an even more stressful situation culture wise.... most of us see nothing wrong with moving out of home at 17 years old and exiling ourselves from family, but their culture is much more extended family oriented, so she is an anomaly as well
