I'm not sure, but here's my try....anything desirable in life often carries with it unpleasantness. Unpleasantess that you have to overcome to attain this desired object/goal -- to get to the flower you must get past the thorns.
Another way to look at it is that the goal/object is itself not completely a good thing and carries drawbacks/setbacks/responsibilities.
