    Hey hosting guys...

    Working on a new project, needed some things from Host Gator to get a script working... These were some of the requirements:

    MySQL (version 4 or higher)
    PHP 5
    Fmpeg (http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu)
    FFmpeg-PHP (http://ffmpeg-php.sourceforge.net)
    Mplayer + Mencoder (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html)
    flvtool2 (http://inlet-media.de/flvtool2)
    Libogg + Libvorbis (http://www.xiph.org/downloads)
    LAME MP3 Encoder (http://lame.sourceforge.net)
    Zend Optimizer

    So I send them an email, usually they are great and get me whatever I need in less than 24 hours, but today I get this response: "Due to the fact that you are using a shared server you will be unable to run FFMPEG at all. If this is something that you absolutely require, you will need to upgrade to a dedicated server."

    Should I just move to dedicated or am I getting the run around?

      Most likely it is because they use shared IP's on their shared servers. If you want to go with a shared server with dedicated IP's I can probably help you.

          Hello Jayvis,

          Different hosts allow for different levels of access on there shared accounts so if the HostGator one doesn't for this particular application then just find one that will.

                          You are not getting the run around. If you look at most shared hosting packages they do not or will not offer ffmpeg because of the bandwith issue/server loads when running tube sites. However there are some companys that do offer shared hosting which include ffmpeg, but they are not very good. If you are gonna run a tube with a lot of hosted movies and push a lot of traffic you would be better of getting a dedicated server. You can get away with doing a tube site on shared hosting if you are only gonna use embeded flvs or plugs to other sites and some short hosted movies., and even then if you generate a lot of traffic your site is going run slow. If you are gonna go for a shared host that offers ffmpeg then google the tubescripts and they normally suggest a shared host that offers ffmpeg, but most of them are pretty crap hosts..

                                          It is probable that a virtual could do it, but dedicated would be the way to go in this case. There are lots of vendors that can do it. I have dedicated packages at 69 bucks. find someone that you can talk to, that understands what you need and can do it. if you need a hand call my cell 818 636 6710.

                                                  That makes sense too me. ffmpeg is, as you may know, used for encoding videos,
                                                  which can be a very CPU intensive process. On a shared account, you're paying
                                                  $5 / month. If I were the host I wouldn't want you burning up all the CPU time
                                                  on a $3,000 server and only paying $5 / month.
