                Estimates I've seen range from 50 to 200 TB/day.

Damn mabe I need to rethink this! Well I own the Domain MYinternetTV.com
and with this domain I think I can compete with youtube. I want to do set top box internet tv in the home along with the youtube style site. I know this is going to cost so much money todo plus I got to get the right people on my side to handel the site. I just dont know where to start.

get a decent biz plan, round up investors, if that doesnt work - forget it

youll go down by the success of the site otherwise, no way a private person can chip in a few 100k a month on BW when ad revenue is lagging

The best way to start is not reveal your entire gameplan on gfy. Better to ask questions in several threads if you must come to gfy for advice.

If you have to ask on GFY, I don't think I'd invest

Unfortunately for you, YouTube is YouTube. The brand is what sets the market potential at this point. Although YouTube's potential market value in an acquisition is pure speculation, it's been suggested that YouTube may be worth anywhere from $600 million to $1 billion.

Meanwhile the site?s bandwidth costs, which increase every time a visitor clicks on a video, may be approaching $1 million a month?much of which goes to provider Limelight Networks.
                                    (?)
Industry observers estimate that YouTube, which is streaming 40 million videos and 200 terabytes of data per day, may be paying between a tenth of a cent and half a cent per minute. Neither YouTube nor Limelight would comment on their pricing.
They can afford this only because they're waiting for the payday, like it was 1999 again.

Estimations of Youtube's bandwidth go from 25TB/day to the 200TB/day above. Let's get a feel for that number. 200 terabytes a day adds up to 6 petabyte per month, or 72 petabyte per year. That's a lot of Libraries of Congress. It's equivalent to a sustained 9.26 Gbps stream, more than any single Serial-ATA or Fibre Channel can deliver.

If you would build your own distributed network of 'standard' unmetered 100Mbps caching servers, optimistically delivering 20TB/month at $2000/month, you would need at least 300 servers - or $600K per month. With Streamload, it?s way more expensive: $4400/15TB or $1,76mio per month for YouTube?s 6PB/month. Although I think Youtube would get a better price since they would need 400 Streamload servers.

                                    Good luck!

You'll start small, so you won't have a million-dollar-a-month bandwidth bill. If you're successful, it will build, but hopefully your income will grow with that. There are lots of other sites that offer an alternative to youtube. grouper for example. What you'd have to see is that you'll never be able to beat youtube unless you beat them with a new idea. Me-too doesn't cut it in the online world.
You need to be remarkably better. Maybe you can pick a video-subniche and start a service there. From what I see on GFY, a video-service for conspiracy nuts could be a place to start. But beating youtube in the mass-market is David vs. Goliath. You'd need to hit them between the eyes to survive.

                                            I'd say - don't.

Go and make something original instead of copying another site - people will like you for it and come to see your stuff.

I read an artivle a few weeks ago and it said they spend a million dollars a day on total expenses. I bet the bandwidth bill is a big part of that.

it only works if you really believe in God and what you're praying. if you pray but pretend to believe in God then it won't work cause God knows what you're thinking at all times. Sometimes it might not work even if you do believe in God but thats just God testing your will so you cant cheat and believe in your prayer for 5 minutes and revert back to a non believer

Unfortunately for you, YouTube is YouTube. The brand is what sets the market potential at this point. Although YouTube's potential market value in an acquisition is pure speculation, it's been suggested that YouTube may be worth anywhere from $600 million to $1 billion.

                                                                          Good luck!
There you have it, lots of numbers and abracadabra, but the bottom line is, you're screwed.

There are plenty of FLV players available on the internet (for free) or a flash coder could make one custom for you in probably one day. All you need is *one* swf to play the videos.

Use 'ffmpeg' to convert mpgs to flv format. It's open source and works really well
