I've been reading about Thailand and Chiangmai sound like just the place for me, not too crowded, cleaner air than Bangkok, cheaper than Phuket (sp) - what else can I want...
the only problem is that I have to leave every 3 months, and I shit my pants when I fly so I have to drive to the nearest coubnty to get my visa extended
you're from Africa, don't tell me where you live you would have to add a zero to that price?
there's Africa and Africa, Google house rentals in Cape Town - they can go up to
10 000 - 30 000 USD per month for uber-luxury houses, I live in Pretoria where the houses are cheaper but still - a house like that in a good area will probably be ~ $1500-$2000 per month
its a thai law..
no foriegners can own land in thailand... if they are married .. even the thai women loses her rights to own thai ground.
in mexico, no foriegner can own beach front property from the waterline up to one mile inland.
this ensures that anyone wants prime real estate for commerce.. they have to have a national partner to keep the money incountry.
thailand.. its different. they believe the land is thai and only thai
North and North-East Thailand is a cheap places to live. This house is out of Chiangmai(some 900 kn North of Bangkok), so its virtually nothing around this compound...what exactly you gonna do there? The pool is communal, not private. The deco is simple, you can see it on the windows and curtains. Good price, but remote area.
When Im in Bangkok I rent an air conditioned room in a condo for $60 a month. Not that I spend much time in bangkok, but its good to park all my luggage and keep coming back to. And the neighbours are very friendly to a foreigner.

Damn! I pay $540 for my appartement right now. It pales in comparison to a house with a pool. Damnit! That's cheap for a house!
Didn't know they were that cheap in Thailand.
Land ownership up to a limited size is possible for US citizens under certain requirements. They are the only foreigners who can legally own land in Thailand in their own name. Other nationals can not.
There are ways to work around this, though, by starting a Thai company with nominee Thai directors and shareholders.

Actually the more I read the more I like the North - as long as its safe and I'm not the only whitie there so people stare at me like I'm some kind of freak, or point a knife at my throat every 10 minutes so they can take my money, I'm good
Bangkok - way to dirty, poluted, crowded etc
Phuket - too expensive (relatively spaking but still)
so what exactly's wrong with Chiangmai? I read quite a bit but you're welcome to comment, never been to Thailand so I might be jumping to the wrong conclusions
That is about right, when i was there I had a great place, loft style in Bangkok for only like 900US. So I would have to think this is right. Have them send you a lease or something for you to review.

A friend of mine has done that for the last 2 1/2 years.
thailand is a shithole , thats why real estate is cheap over this region.
Yea, that must be where they are building the multi-million dollar homes.
SOME parts are shit holes, as it is with any city or country. Other parts are incredible. Most people who have no idea what they are talking about other than the few shitty places they went on vacation will say it's a shit hole.
Up until recently it was a 3rd world country. Parts are going to be dirty. You are going to see poverty. But that does not mean the entire country is a shit hole.
The people on the other and.... something to get used to.
