Most people will recommend this course of action, aka. starting a blog. Why? Because it helps you get your feet wet as an affiliate, while learning the ins and outs and NOT investing a huge amount of money. By being an affiliate, you'll gain a much better understanding of how to be a sponsor, and a successful one at that, since you understand their side of the biz, i.e. support, promo tools, sites, etc.
And, if you realize $1000 down the road that it's not for you, then you still have the other 4. However, if you decide that you'd like to go further, then you have more experience and knowledge to better invest the remaining 4.
