Is private school better than public school?

Did you attend private school or send your kids to one? I thought that my public education was all around quite good. I wonder how much better it would have been in a private school.

I went mostly to private schools and some public schools. It really depends on the school. My son went to a charter public school that was rated one of the top 5 in the nation (including private schools) when he was there.

Parental involvement is the key. If you're in an upper class area where most of the mothers are SAHM, you get a lot of volunteers to help do things and also there's money to be donated.

Most states/counties have oodles of information regarding scores, grades, drop out rates, how many go to college, etc on public and private schools. Just do YOUR homework and you can find out what you need

Public shools are more real life..you have to deal with all walks of life..private schools are better for drugs...the students have more money;therefore, more drugs...i went to both

I went to a private school for a few years after being expelled from a public school. You can get a more personalized education but some of your fellow classmates can be very negative influences if there for reasons like I was.

I went to private school from Preschool to 8th grade and switched to public school for high school. My private school education enable me to cruise through high school by barely opening a book and I'd marvel at the stupidity of the solely public school educated kids. There was a huge amount of information they simply had not been taught.

In public school my second grade daughter was barely reading. After a couple of years of Catholic school, she went back to public and has excelled ever since. But I think it depends on the individual schools and the individual children, as opposed to public vs. private. No one thing is better for anyone. With my daughter there was always a lot of trial and error to find what worked for her, but my son easily soars through everything, no matter where he is.

I went to private school when I was in grade school and public in High School. I think quality of education depends on the student. Although teachers in private schools are good.

And somehow students will tend to study more if they're in private schools 'coz tuitions are higher compare to Public.

I was at public school, in montreal now, I would probably send my kids to a private school more so for the religion etc.. so they at least get a bit. No religion in public schools anymore its Human Studies or whatever. I went to catholic elementary (where any even revolved around a mass at the church up the street) and HS for 2 years, when they got rid of religion I switched HS. Human Studies was only mandatory until Sec 4. (Grade 11) I think its good that kids at least have a taste of their religion etc..

I am confused. Public school means Private school in the UK

Not sure we have a term for non private schools except perhaps state school as in 'Are you sending Jonny to the state school or public school?' So state school is public and the public school is private. Ok thats cleared that up!

When you put it that way, it's hard to disagree.

But I wonder whether it is worse for a child to be neglected and understimulated because his particular public school is ill-funded and staffed by teachers whose only teaching credential is a willingness to work for $28,000... OR, for a kid to find himself going to Branch Davidian High, just because that's who is "in power" in his town. Like Jimmy said, good and bad in both.

Which is why charter schools are so good - they take a lot of power away from the government.

Private schools are regulated in several ways by the government also.

Getting away from the government and education in America is almost impossible. They even have laws regarding homeschooling!

I had gone to private school and then Mom kept popping out too many damn kids so they had to put me in public city schools because of the cost. The switch to public was a huge difference.

My knowledge was way beyond what the public school level was, to the point that I had to skip a grade. Even that next grade was below my level so they tried bumping me 2 grades ahead, but the school board wouldn't allow it, said they could only allow me to skip 1 year max. So I was bumped one grade and put into the gifted program instead and had a boring school experience.

I don't want kids, but if I ever did, I'd go private all the way.

It all comes down to money. Every child may deserve a good education, but the fact is that school districts with a lot of low income areas are not collecting enough in property taxes to fund their school system.

Look at the money spent per student reports. If it's nothing but upper middle class to high class, then the facilities and teachers will probably rival that of a private school.

Another thing to consider is that it is the primary choice of every teacher to work with upper class white kids. The closer the school is to that situation, the better the teachers will be. Ask yourself how good a teacher is that can't get out of a school filled with rowdy soon to be dropouts.

                                        I've attended both.

                                        Private: grades 5th-9th
                                        Public: grades 10th-12th.

I hated private school, personally. When I started to go to a public school, it was a wake up call to reality. I also loved how I could express myself byu dressing the way I wanted to, as opposed to private school.

FYI, i went to a Catholic Private School, so I think that helped me want to break out of that sheltered life and sell porn lol I dont recomend private schools, unless you are scared for your kid(s) saftey or something.

I went to a Prep school in CT all through high school. Even though the town in CT where I grew up, had a top notch public school system. I seriously doubt there was that much of a difference between the education provided by both. But it's totally different town by town. Like it was said above, it's all about how much the town rakes in in property taxes.

Not that I'm saying I attended one, but aside from the education itself, if the goal is to get into prestigious university, then there's no doubt.....The admissions office wants to see a high school transcript from the likes of "XYZ Academy" or "ABC Preparatory School".

At the risk of stating the obvious, they are only 'more real life' for the majority of the middle and lower classes.

My only taste of public schools was a few semester in US public schools: in the UK I went to private (although there we call them public) schools throughout my school 'career'. Although there are a few exceptional state-run schools in the UK and some poor private/public schools, generally the educational standards of the private schools are far higher and pupils get a much broader education, beyond the merely academic. Most such schools are not unlike the army in that first they teach you how to accept discipline and then to develop self-discipline. From what I have seen, that is one of the biggest differences from public schools, there and here.

I caught the last few years of my step-daughters' education in the US public school system and above all it struck me as a giant confidence trick. You have kids coming home at 3:30 in the afternoon with little if any homework, along with all the other symptoms of a minimal attempt at providing good education. So when kids graduate high school, they face four years of paying for a degree course, because they have to spend a year learning things which in most, if not all of Europe, they would have learned before college/university. Worse, despite the cost of further education here, most degree courses are distinctly second rate by European standards.

PS: those who think big government is to blame for the state of education here should do some research. Over 70% of educational spending is controlled locally by school boards. It is their unwillingness to see their influence reduced which is responsible for the huge, expensive and often very ineffective schools which dominate US education.

It really depends where you live and the schools in the area. If you live in a nice area, public is the way to go. If you live in a bad area, you have to go to private. I live in a very nice part of Chicago, but if I had kids, I wouldn't send them to the local public school. If I lived in the suburbs though, I would.

If I remember correctly, in Freakonomics the authors claim that it makes very little difference what school you send your kids to.

I went most of my entire school days in the private school. I tried our local public school once but i didn't last long cause the teachers are really nasty and they don't care if the kids were well taught just as long as they get their pay. I got one incident though that my math teacher lost my exam paper and gave me an F. I reasoned out why he did that, and it was totally not my fault that he lost it. He said that i just name the grade I want, i told him that's BS cause i worked and studied hard for the exam. I think he was expecting me to give him something to get a good grade...

Most private schools have a compartively smaller number of students than public schools. Thus, having private school students a learning advantage.
