I know what you mean, I always try to sleep at least six hours and I do fine my girlfriend on the other hand always sleeps 8-10 hours. Less than that and she's sleepy all day.

As for the sleep issue, i always find that with less sleep (i.e. waking up earlier), i initially feel crap, but then feel great for the rest of the day; whereas with more sleep (i.e. waking up later), i initially feel brilliant, but then feel crap and "lagged" for the rest of the day.
