Staying awake during surgery. Am I nuts?

    I have always BEGGED to be completely knocked out during each and every one of my many surgeries. Personally I'd pay them 10X as much not to hear/see/feel pressure/etc.

                                                    Every surgery I've had I've been knocked completely out. But something way down there on the foot I think I could handle being awake for as long as they're not amputating it. Fixing it, yeah I think going the route you're going with the mp3 player would be just fine. Needles are nothing, they're mosquito bites and are over in a few seconds each.

                                                            Screw that, I had my left hand done for carpal tunnel and they asked me if I wanted a local I was like O HHelll no knock my ass out, went out like a light it was the best sleep I have ever had! This was in June, now Dec 18th I had the same thing done again but this time in my right hand and again HELL no knock me out, but this time the med's they gave me burned like a bitch going in and I was like hey this shit hurts and before anything else could come out I was gone! LOL

                                                                                                                But for heavens sake, don't even think on epidural, that sucks... Gave me a shitty pain in the back for about 4 years.

                                                                                                                            I thought ahead and took my iPod. They let me have it in the OR and I watched videos during the biggest part of it. You are right, it was much better as far as getting out of there quickly and no drug haze. The worst part was all the injections to numb it. Holy cow. Those things were not pleasant. But, once my foot was numb it was not a bad experience at all. I even watched the xrays when they checked to see if the rods were in position.

                                                                                                                            Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, stories, comments and well wishes. I am on the road to recovering now and should be back on both feet in 8 weeks.
