yes, East Texas was settled from survivors of Sherman's march to the sea . . my folks were starved out of Ireland by the English and burned out of Tennessee by Sherman . .Originally posted by fr0gmanMy family fought as well and contrary to what people in today's world would like you to believe the vast majority of the men and (mostly) boys that fought and died had no stake in slavery. In truth the Civil War was not about slavery at all. The slavery issue has been over inflated to bolster certain agendas over the years.
The southern states were invaded and the citizens did what ANY of us would do today; they fought to protect their homes and families.
I invite anyone to do a little research into how Sherman, a US General did on his "March to the Sea". If there have ever been war crimes committed they were committed by Sherman.
The Stars and Bars represents a level of courage wrought from fear and executed in the face of overwhelming adversity. To me it has nothing to do with racism and slavery. For someone to say that the flag equates to the swastika shows that they know NOTHING about the Civil War nor about the actions of the Nazis. There were no Confederate "Death Camps". There were just people, regular people, trying to survive.Comment

To say that the political and economic motives for seperation has nothing to with slavery is a bit ignorant imo. Especially when the south's secession occured directly after lincoln was elected and his political wishes to end slavery was well known. Not to mention that the economic base for most of the south was agriculture (unlike the north which was manufacturing) and the end of slavery meant the wealthy aristocrats (the people who voted to secede) would take a major hit in the pocketbook.
However frogman I do agree that maybe 1 out of 50 people in the south had anything to do with the slave trade and most were merely defending themselves. Sad chapter in American history for sure.
I have no problem with it as long as it's not carried by a clansmen."..and which one of you had the prime rib?" - Waiter

Here in NC if you can trace back to the Civil War and you can prove you had a family member that fought you can get a license plate with the flag on it.Comment
