But (as a sidenote) that doesn't have to mean they are actually true. When has the idea started to use polls to learn about reality? If you make a poll about how may electrons a phosphorus atom has, do you think you'd get a worthwhile answer? Just because many people believe that something is true doesn't make it so.

How do you think polls are conducted? Knocking on every door in the country?

It's called "sampling" and statistically, when done right, these kind of polls are extremely accurate in predicting the population's views.

And actually, 10000 is a bit high

I believe it was aliens that did it. They were pissed off because of Roswell shootdown and after traveling some lightyears it was payback time.
