The Middle East is an important and rich area for oil. The US needs to ensure a constant supply of oil and of course several government officials have interest in certain oil companies. They cannot establish a base of operations without any good reason for it so they had to create a reason to get involved in the Middle East.
Afghanistan is an important link in the potential oil pipeline network and thus they needed to establish some form of control there as well. The Taliban and Osama bin Laden provided the necessary reasoning to control that region.
They could have chosen tons of ways to come up with a backing for troops in the Middle East but at the time US citizens were becoming more and more aware of the fact that their government was just bullying around other countries and grew discontent. Therefore they needed such a drastic event as 9/11, to spin public opinion 180 degrees.
Just the way the Twin Towers collapsed is not consistent with what we've been told. Key parts of the building were shipped off to China for recycling without a chance to do any research on them.
