                          http://www.state.gov/www/regions/africa/naffpub.pdf

You can lose more than your money:

"Over the past 3 years, 15 foreign businessmen (one American) have been murdered
                          in Nigeria in AFF scams.

Since September 1995, at least eight Americans have been held against their will by
these criminals in Lagos that have come to the attention of the U.S. Embassy. In
1996 the U.S. Embassy helped repatriate ten Americans who came to Lagos looking
                          for their ?pot of gold.?"

This scam has been around in paper and fax form since the 1980s. It is a very popular scam. I got two today - and some people I know get half a dozen or so everyday.

p.s. If some hispanic looking person asks for your help in cashing a lottery ticket (because he or she can't - as they are an illegal alien) Don't fall for that either - it is the same scam - just a lot less complicated.

You would think how dumb are people to fall for this. I saw one show on scams and they (a newscrew pretending to be scammers to see if people were really that dumb) were able to get them on that one - they did.

They got almost EVERYONE on the ATM/Deposit Box is broken - deposit the money in the mailbox scam.

Cool, how does that one work? I'm Hispanic and I live right near the border, I bet I could pull this one some old folks and earn some extra cash this Christmas...

You buy a lottery ticket on 12/17/01 with the winning numbers from 12/11/01. You alter the ticket to appear that it is from 12/11/01.

Depending what state you are in this is not very hard to do - as the code numbers at the bottom of the ticket are all that are really checked - you could cut out the numbers and they could still tell what is the winner.

However, you are not trying to fool the state, just the "mark". You leave the drugstore and approach some guy that looks like he has a few hundred bucks on him.

"Excuse me sir, I have the winning lottery ticket from last week, but they won't let me cash it (without id, Social Security Number, whatever)."

"You see - my visa expired two months ago, and I just wanted to spend Christmas with my family before returning home."

"The ticket is worth $600, but I will sell it to you for $400 if you use your name and info."

Mark:"Well I would need to know the ticket is a real winner."

Con man shows him the ticket and the mark goes in and looks up the winning number for that day. It helps if there is an ATM machine there.

He comes out gives the guy $400 for the ticket - expecting a $200 profit, but the codes will come back - this ticket is not a winner.

You have to have the right attitude - very paranoid and not wanting to go back into the drugstore.

And if you want to practice for vegas - there is always coffee cup scam. Hard to see on the cameras if done right - and works better for women than men. If done wrong - you will miss all the parties as Nevada doesn't look to kindly about things like this.

Find a big winner and ask if you tap his chips for good luck - you have trouble with the hand your "purse" is in and instead tap it with the bottom of your coffee cup. (You make the maneuver the same way you do when having to use your left hand instead to shake someone's hand - as your other one is busy.)

The dual sided tape causes a chip to stick to the bottom of your cup and off you go - probably to jail, but you might get lucky.
