I stopped flying about 3 years ago to do an onset of panic anxiety disorder for some unknown reason.

I take the train now and I tell you I love it.

It may take 3 days to get there but it can be a great 3 days.

Earlier this year I was on a biz trip to LA from Fort Worth and it was one big ass party train...LOL.

You meet great people, there is a bar car, and you don't ever get that feeling of travelling.

You can get up and walk around, go sit in the bar car and watch a movie, and the food in the dining car is fabulous.

If you do do this and the trip takes more than 2 days I suggest you get a sleeper. While it may be more expensive it will provide much more enjoyment during the trip.

#1 You get a bed which a porter sets up for you nightly.
#2 You get your own private bathroom and a shower.
#3 There's an electrical hook up to recharge those laptop batteries

But most importantly it really eliminates that rush to get there feeling.
Honestly you really never concern yourself with "when are we going to get there?"
Just kick back relax and watch some beautiful scenery shoot by

I wanted to drive too but no one else in my group has enough time off to drive so I am stuck flying. But I hear you, if anything funny happens on my plane I will not idly sit by. I will kick some ass too. I have a very bad temper

I am thinking maybe Valium might help? I think my doctor will prescibe it no problem. But I've never taken anything like it so...

I have a slight fear of flying (moreso just a fear of landing)... Anyway, I've flown a lot since Sept. 11th and I thought my fears would have been worse, but they're not at all. I would suggest maybe some Nyquil rather then going all the way to the valium, but thats up too...

I've flown more than 15,000 miles SINCE Sept 11, and am going to get about another 5k BEFORE we go to Vegas, over the holidays.

I really can't imagine NOT flying, and there's no real reason that I can see to be more afraid now.

The airports are taking a much closer look at people and while it's very inconvenient, any time they have a security breach, they pull everyone out of the terminal and make them all go back thru security -- while refusing to debark passengers who've landed until the security is clear again.

I also figure that if someone were to get on a flight I was on and start acting all crazy, the passengers would beat the fuck out of the guy regardless.

Actually, Its not the terrorists that I'm afraid of. It's more a fear of the plane crashing.

Up until a few years ago I had never flown in a plane. Not due to fear or whatever, the situation just never arose. I booked myself a months vacation in europe. Leaving from Oakland to Holland a total of like 11 hours in the air...as the day drew closer I thought I was gonna die...I dunno why but I had this inexplicable fear all the sudden. So I decided to take a valium or 2 and drink a few in flight "Heiney's" an hour off the ground I was out like a light. Well about 8 hours later I wake up groggy and scared shitless...as I look out the window I see this huge expanse of ocean and Ice (greenland) and I start thinking HOLY SHIT if we go down I'm gonna die a freezing death and flames and blood and oh GOD! So I suffer horribly the last few hours...Well the return trip I figure you know what, Fuckit...to what extent do I really have control over whether I die or not in this fucking hunk of metal. But at the same time I figure I might as well be alert and ready for whatever situation might arise. And you know if I'm gonna meet my maker I wanna be able to complete my sentences. So i take a dramamine and go it sober...well at least the hash was mostly worn off...and it was fine...I put my head phones on, and relaxed, i looked out the window and marvelled at the glory of the wonderful vantage point the plane afforded...I took deep breathes and just chilled...anytime a fear or anxiety arose i said "fuckit", sometimes you just gotta realize that its just as dangerous (maybe more so) to walk out your front door in the morning. And you know what, "fuckit", I'm gonna die when I'm gonna die...but until that day...I'm gonna live it up.

My moral and my advice here...Take some dramamine. Its hard to feel relaxed when you feel sick. Grab a few of your favorite Cd's. It's hard to fear death when Englebert Humperdink is Rocking...ahem. And lastly, say "Fuckit" as often as necessary...even out loud once or twice...its a good philosophy as a whole.

Oh and try if possibly not to look at the wing, concentrate on the clouds or something, cause the wings do weird shit that might freak you out.

Hope that helps...and heck before you know it, you'll be like me...you'll have forgotten your fear of flying and be back to getting drunk on the plane...=)

you can buy it at any health food store

just take two of those and you're frayed nerves will be settled

it has a remarkable influence on the cerebro-spinal system, and is used as a sedative to the higher nerve centres in conditions of nervous unrest

i will often use it for either insomnia or tension

Lemme rephrase that...

Flying rules, not for the sake of simply flying, but for the speed at which it can transport your carcass from one location to another. Why drive for 12 hours when you can fly there in one? Plus, there are lots of places that you MUST fly to get to, such as the Hawaiian Islands.... there's only one freakin' way in, and that's on a plane baby!

Even though I have flown ALOT over the course of a few years, at no time has flying thru the air at 30k feet in a pressurized aluminum tube made much sense to me.

Eros, I hear ya. I have the exact same thing. Sucksa BIG time, I'd like to get on vacation more and would love to go to Vegas. Pretty tough to get there swimming however.

Naughty while it's a horrible condition I am not surprised that someone else on this board suffers from the same thing.
I have learned over the last 3 years that there are a lot of people including the likes of Kim Bassinger. In fact the CEO of the company I was meeting with in LA suffered from the same condition and just told me to get drunk...LOL.
But over time working with doctors etc I have been able to eliminate drugs in my life to treat the condition.

I ahte being in a commercial plane - I'mn not scared of flying - in fact I love to fly - I've flown a cessna before - but commercial airlines are co cramped and horrible.
I am claustraphobic and I have really bad panic attacks when I'm just sitting there cramped in for more than an hour.

I have to fly all the way from Brisbane - it's like a 17 hour flight!!

I am just gona get really pissed (OZ for Drunk) and pass out.

Fatal Car accidents are so damn common, they hardly make the news. Yet, none of us are afraid to drive?

I've only flown a few times in my life, but I LOVE IT ! It's a great feeling getting in a plane and getting off across the country.

As far as my feelings now after September 11th. I guess that I feel a little different about flying, but I'm not afraid or anything, I'd be more than willing to jump on a plane.

To prove my point to you, if someone wants to get me a ticket to Vegas and give me full accomadations, I'll show you that I'm brave enough to do a round trip, ha ha ha.

Thanks for pointing that out. It put things into perspective for me and flying doesn't seem so bad now.

However, I'm now frightened of driving, walking down the street, and riding my bike without the trainers.
