Should I put my dog down? What would you do?

We have 3 dogs. They are a total pain most of the time, but we feel strongly about giving them a good home and feel good that we rescued them from the pound years ago. Rascal, has not adjusted well with our 1 year old. She is extremely jealous, and will start fights with our other big dog, Buster. Well, today was the breaking point. She tackled him (Buster) out in the yard and when we got her off of him, Buster couldn't use his hind legs. He has since recovered use of them, but is spending about 24 hours (or more, we'll see) with the vet to determine where and to what extent his back is injured. His hips are completely arthritic apparently, which has made him an easy target to her bullying. In addition to that, she freaks around our son and growls around him. Not at him, per se, but in protest when he gets attention and she does not.

I really feel like I need to get her out of the house. There is a small chance that Buster will have to be put down because of the injuries she caused, but the vet said that if something like this happens again, it is very likely he will be. So in looking around for the best solution, I've discovered that if we take her to a shelter, she will most likely be euthanized if she isn't adopted in a matter of a week or so. I've contacted the two No Kill programs in my area and am awaiting responses from those, but they are hard to get in to. The third option is to "rehome" her with another individual or family, but that takes time, which we might not have when Buster comes home tomorrow, and I'm afraid some sicko will get her or she won't be taken care of without someone officially screening people the way shelters do. Last but not least is to put her down ourselves so she wont have to wonder what happened to her family, and eventually be put down by strangers. What would you do?

Seriously? This is going to sound cruel, but it's the cheapest solution that will work:

Buy a minimum of 250,000kv stun gun for most dogs, depending on the dog's size it may have go go up significantly or down some. For a large dog I would suggest 950,000kv, medium no more than 300,000kv, small around 125,000kv. When the dog growls, pop it with a very short burst of one two three seconds. Repeat as necessary. Within ten shocks, I guarentee the dog will stay in line and at the sight of the stun gun will immediately fall back in line w/o having to ever use it again.

Yeah, the main issue isnt her growling at our kid. She knows she'd be in deep shit if she ever hurt him. We have to protect the other dog. He's unable to play anymore since this latest incident.

Most often a vet will not put a dog down that is healthy simply because you can't handle it. Tought situation though.

I have two Rottweilers and rescued a third, who was a puppy at the time. When she was full grown, she started giving my existing female a hard time, and it has led to more than one fight, one time she ripped open the skin on the other dog's neck. For awhile I kept them seperate and took the new dog for obedience training. She has really calmed down after the training and doesn't bother the other dog so much anymore. I have to keep a close watch on them though.

I would try obedience training. Speak to a qualified trainer and tell them your problem, see if they can help you? If you really can't handle it, give the dog away or take it to a shelter.

Yeah, that might be an option. My wife is a wreck since this is her dog. She feels we took on the responsibility to take care of these dogs and must live through our commitment, but I think we'll ask our Vet what the best option would be. Maybe he knows of an adoption program, hopefully.

Find a reputable obedience trainer and ask them if they think they can help. Seriously.

Give her up for adoption and specify that she shoukld be placed with someone that doesn't have other dogs! That way she'd be the center of attention and happy!

The best thing to do is to get him a trainer. Only professional dog trainers could handle such problem.

I would put both dogs down, especially since dogs go downhill quick with spinal trouble (I've had a few, but genetic troubles)

I've also had an agressive dog and had to put him down when he went after a neighbor kid. Thank god the kid got inside his house.

I'm just in shock that someone would even consider putting their dog down because it doesn't get along with their other dog. Seperate them, give the dog to a good home, or any other of a hundred options that doesn't involve killing the poor thing! If your son grows up to be a bully, whatcha gonna do...put one between his eyes?

It's nice you want to protect your other dog but...

You ever see a news story where a dog has attacked and seriously injured or killed a child? The people always say "well old Rover knew better than to bite someone. We don't know why he bit that little 3 year olds ear off!"

You'll never think it will happen til it does.

No, the kid he's picking is more likely to bring a gun to school and save the parents the hassle of having to do it themselves.

I'd get a dog trainer, and not just any dog trainer, find someone who knows what they're doing. Ask a cop that has police dog or someone associated.

I'd keep the dogs separated in the meantime 'cause you just know she won't let go of him when he's back. And if she does pick on him you have to put your foot down and punish her appropriately otherwise, just like kids, she'll think she can get away with it

and your wife, do make sure she's on the same page disciplining the dog. If the dog is doing something bad she has to react, you can't be the only one saying "Bad dog" while your wife wants to hug her and have her be mommy's girl, otherwise the dog training will be completely pointless

Please try every option you can before you put the dog down. If you do put her ( the aggressive one) down don't post about it here. Some other lady came here and wanted sympathy because she put her dog down cuz the dog was jealous for he newborn baby and boy that got ugly, I don't know her name but it was ugly.

Yeah, we are going to try every option before it has to come to that. We've decided to send her off to training school.

Don't put the dog down. Can you seperate the dogs? One outside, the rest inside etc? Sometimes a dog's demeanor changes when something is wrong with it. Have you taken the dog to the vet?

                                                            Good luck!

i think i'd sooner drop the dog off in some rural area where its more likely someone will at least feed it rather than just put it down. people seem to do this with cats all the time and people like my mom would feed them.

I think animals were doing well millions of years before humans came into the scene and started domesticating them for our own personal enjoyment. I can't believe you just actually said that animals need love lmao... animals do not understand human emotions. They do not love, they don't know what love is. For you to even say that... hahahaha, it makes me laugh a hundred times over. God damn you people in projecting YOUR emotions on animals. It's delicious, it's great! I own a few dogs myself but man... you actually think they NEED LOVE rofl hahahahahaha

LMAO, nice one. Why even respond period if you don't give a fuck what I think? You obviously do you fucking douche bag. You just can't face facts that little fluffy there doesn't love you eh? All that time you've spent cleaning up after him? All that time you've fed him and gave him water and brought him to the vet to make sure he's healthy? Awwwww, you upset now just a little? You can debate it all you want: The FACT is animals were doing fine millions of years before humans came into the scene. Humans BRED the current dogs into existence for THEIR ENJOYMENT. Those dogs do NOT have human feelings, and they can't understand what you say to them. If you say "I love you boo boo" in a loud fucking voice it'll scare the shit out of them just like if you say "I'm going to kill you with a big kitchen knife!" in a little voice they'll think you are playing.

I can't believe you actually think dogs need your love... you are the funniest fuck at gfy bro. Domesticated dogs need two things from you: Nourishment and Shelter. That's it. Anything else YOU are projecting on them. And that's fine dude, don't feel so bad. People project their feelings on all sorts of things that can't return them. Computers, cars, expensive hookers -- a lot of shit. So don't feel bad, keep on projecting your love to your animals. Just realize when you come to a forum and start saying that they NEED your love it makes you look like a total assclown.
