In our own backyard, I've seen footage of the abuse chickens and so forth. Crabs and lobsters are boiled alive because people believe it makes the meat more tender. Seals are slaughtered up north. People still buy fur and ivory and we know where adn how those are gotten. Maybe we should think about all the industrial pollutants that we throw into our rivers, lakes, and oceans. Luckily we don't have to live in that water, but the sea animals do. That effects tens of millions more animals than some Chinese dudes taking out stray dogs to control disease.
crab and lobsters are not cooked alive to make the meat more tender. they have to be cooked alive because the moment they die the meat begins to breakdown and becomes toxic due to certain chemicals in their bodies (not true of every single species) and it can also kill other deadly bacteria they carry from time to time.
seals are not "slaughtered" up north. only a few small groups of native alaskans kill seals for their meat and skin and use every part of them. no part of them is sold to anyone. you can't sell or trade seal fur.
people buy ivory? uhm... yeah. they do. does anyone kill a walrus to get walrus ivory? uhm... no they don't. they are only legally hunted again by a few native groups for FOOD and walrus populations have exploded in the last 50 years. do you know anything about ivory and buying ivory in alaska or from alaska? "how it is gotten" is not an issue. its found, its registered with the alaska department of fish and game and it cannot be sold until carved into some finished product by a native. as someone that grew up in alaska and commercial fishing all along the bering sea coast, i can tell you that walrus ivory can be found in great abundance without killing any because they only haul out to rest at specific places during their migrations and many die in those exact places.... and its a felony crime to try to take the ivory for a white man.

I've been catching crab my whole life and this is the biggest crock of shit I have ever heard.
ok... should have clarified. i was born and raised in alaska. i am american. i was only commenting on what i know to be happening there. i have no idea what those crazy canadians are up to.

really, i've caught hundreds of thousands of tons of crab. wanna compare notes retard? you don't eat dead crab. ever. period. there are only a few species that are safer than others. just because you haven't gotten sick or died yet, does not mean you are right.

not only that... a large tank with live crab (i.e. commercial fishing) and having only a few die can kill all the other crab from the toxins released from the dead crab.

Care to share your source for this? If it's true I can't argue with it.

You're uninformed about this

well... i'm from alaska, my father is a brown bear guide, all his friends are professional guides and hunters. i spent most of my youth hunting and fishing and living in aleut villages during the summers and have spent more than my share of time in remote villages or places like St Paul Island where i actually went and watched them kill seals. (if anything, they seem to be over populated) and its pretty humane. they have very soft skulls which is why they are clubbed. i have killed one in the past just by hitting it in the top of the head with a knife handle and was surprised at how little force it took to kill it. i have eaten more fucking seal meat than anyone here (it tastes like shit except for the heart and liver). i had a pet seal one summer that was orphaned. i have bought and sold a lot of ivory. i have killed well over 1000 seals myself fishing salmon in the summers as a kid by gunning them down with assault rifles as they try to rip salmon from the nets.
i can guess that at a minimum, i can say that i am a little more informed than most when it comes to what happens there, what the federal and state laws are and how these things are managed.

I've been catching crab from my cabin in Sequim Bay, WA and out on the Dungeness Spit with 4 traps every summer since I was 6 years old. So, ya, you ever want to compare notes you just fucking let me know smart guy.
its pretty humane. they have very soft skulls which is why they are clubbed.
Is that what your daddy told you so you wouldn't cry? They're fucking clubbed because they get less money for bullet holes, and sometime when you shoot them they get away and die underwater, so not only did you lose a pelt that was worth less then one you clubbed, but you lost a pelt.
i can't find anything quickly about cooking crab while its still alive... but trust me, as a commercial fisherman from alaska and someone that grew up in the seafood industry.. its a fact. you just don't eat crab after its dead. i'm not saying that people dont do it. i am not saying that some idiot from buttfuck, maine didn't eat dead crab all teh time and live. i am simply saying that there are serious concerns and risks associated with it and thats why. has nothing to do with "tender meat"
when crab are dead, they are garbage. they spoil extremely fast once dead, but there are some toxins that are produced as the meat degrades that are also dangerous. crab processors don't use dead crab. when a boat delivers say 100,000 pounds of red king crab, they are delivered alive. usually there is some "dead loss" - like a few crab if all went well. those crab are garbage and thrown overboard... or some processors make them into fertilizers and other products as they do with waste... but they are never cooked and packaged.

as i said in the above post. i have killed plenty of seals. jesus. can you read?
seals are not shot "because of bullet holes in the pelts" - they are herded up on land and clubbed because a seal that is shot typically sinks right away, which defeats the purpose of hunting them at all. also, in st paul, it is the traditional method and even their clubs for killing them are passed down from father to son.

LMAO, you think maybe that's might be because they stay out there catching crab until the limit has been met and some of the dead crabs may be dead for days or even weeks?
The reason you can't find it is because it doesn't exist.
does it really matter if you die in .1 second or 1 second or 2 or 3? this might have escaped your "enlightened" attention... but death is forever. its not like they all end up in the hospital in pain for 8 months. they die. right there... on the spot. they die.
One day you will die like all of us for sure. Maybe it´s a death like that... But it doesn´t make a differnce for you, as you just pointed out.

you are so far from having a clue about what you are talking about that its not worth answering. as i said, i grew up commercial fishing in alaska and continued for a good portion of my life. apparently only one of us has caught significant amounts of crab commerically and knows anything about it. thats where my expertise, experiences and answers come from. what about you? discovery channel?

I've heard this before, but I thought it had been put to rest as a wives tale or was misunderstood with the fact that crabs spoil quickly after they die. It just seems unlikely that if you cut its head off or bashed its brain in and then threw it directly into a boiling pot of water that the level of toxins would be much different.
My understanding is that crabs can only survive about 24-48 hours out of water and the minute they're pulled on deck they're out of the water and packed with ice to keep them alive for as long as possible. They're shipped to stores within this period of time and hopefully sold.
Anyway, we've gotten away from the point which was simply to show that we do similar things in this country for less important reasons than disease conrol which is what the Chinese are trying to do. You can either spend tons of money on munitions (which they likely cannot afford) and risk having people killed or injured handling weapons to kill the animals or you can beat them to death, or you can risk an disease epidemic.

What was the name of your boat and captain?
I was on the Manis (Steiner Manis) boat in the summer of 89, 90, and 91.

this depends on the species of crab. in alaska and pacific coast for example, dungeness crab are often shipped all ovr the states live. they are kept in salt water tanks on boats, brought to the processing facility, bound with rubber bands and then packed in wax line boxes with ice. they can live a couple days like this. these are also very hardy crab. i am sure this is true of some east coast crab (blue crab, stone crab etc) probably as well. but for other commerically caught crab such as those in alaska (red king crab, blue king crab, brown king crab, the two species of snow crab) - they are caught, kept on board in circulating salt water, delivered alive and they are cooked and processed alive. any dead crab are thrown away.

and what? why would i care? it doesn't even ring a bell and i am very familiar with the bering sea trawl and crab fleet. i have only fished in the bering sea and russia and a little off the coast of washington. i live in seattle. i could name the long list of boats i worked on, in addition to all companies i worked for building/repairing nets (NETS, SWAN, LFS, Dantrawl,), the super trawlers i worked on, the super trawlers i worked on in russia, the boats i worked on during all the years i lived in kodiak alaska, all the time i spent in dutch harbor and akutan and childhood summers in port moller etc etc etc... still wouldn't change the stupidity and ignorance of your remarks.

Ya, well if you were a crabber you would know that the season isn't in the summer, it starts in Oct.

who the fuck said anything about summer and crab fishing? jesus, you are a retard. and by the way,,, brown crab in AK was a summer fishery as is dungeness and blue crab season is typically in sept.... not oct.
do you have anymore uninformed remarks, greenhorn??

I wonder if you know my friend Roland Badertscher.
LMAO, do you read the posts you respond do, or do you just open your ass and let the words come out?
i read that you said you were catching crab your whole life... then admitted it was only for a couple seasons and on some boat i have never heard of (which most likely means it was a piece of shit if it was ever in alaska and 2) you are probably someones cousin or nephew and they got you a shitty job on a processor where you never saw the light of day), had no idea that dead crab are not processed and had no idea that brown king crab and dungeness are fished primarily in the summer.

You need to learn to read..
Catching crab my EVERY SUMMER SINCE I WAS 6 at my Cabin in Sequim Bay and Dungeness Spit, since you live in Seattle, maybe you should check your fucking state map and see where that is. Here I'll tell you, Go to Edmonds, Catch the Kingston Ferry, take the 101 all the way to Sequim Bay.
I hate to break the news to your idiot brain, but fishing commercial crab 89, 90, 91, and fishing off my 20' Bayliner Trophy with traps in the Olympic Penninsula are two different fucking things dipshit, sorry your brain is not capable of having more than one conversation at a time.
Well all I can say if someone ever tried to pull that stunt of clubbing my dogs while I'm walking them, they better club and kill me first, because I would protect my dogs with my life the same way they protect mine.

Talk is cheap. I could just see you walking thru some town in China and coming up with that.

Are you suggesting your dogs have more rights than a crab? How so?
Chinese culture doesn't have much respect for animal welfare.
That's actually mild compared to pics I've seen out of China from the animal welfare groups I support.
Usually to tenderize the dog meat instead of slaughtering the dog quickly they hang it from a wire rope and then beat it slowly with a baseball bat to break all the bones so the dog is in total agony and pain for about 30 minutes before it dies.
They also blowtorch them to death.
They also will stick them all over with a knife.
They also skin dogs and cats alive without killing them first. Just slice their hide open and then start pulling it off of them.
The believe the adrenaline and shock reaction makes the meat more tender.
Besides, medical and military lab experiment pics, which are beyond horrendous in every country, the asian animal abuse pics are the worst you'll see.
Besides the public awareness campaigns, there isn't really a way to effectively stop the abuse.
Sickening.
And i can't believe some of the attitudes of some assholes on here...
