Exactly, the guy knew what he would be facing for doing what he did. He's lucky in my opinion, it would be a lot worse if he did that to Saddam or one of his buddies. He lives in Iraq and knows how life and the laws are there. If he doesn't then he should've asked someone first. Iraq isn't the USA, the laws are different. It might not be a big deal to do that shit here but obviously it is in Iraq. You can say he had the right because bush did this or that but it doesn't make any difference to their gov or the law there.Comment

I find it interesting that not one person referred to "this man" by his real name, Muntader al-Zaidi. I think that says a lot about our perspective on Iraqi's.
Also, I do agree that al-Zaidi could have expressed his dislike for Bush in another way. However, considering that his country was invaded more than five years ago in a preemptive manner and thousands of Iraqi's have died as a direct result, I can understand his desire to take advantage of being so physically close to Bush. I don't condone it but I do empathize with him.
The Bush doctrine:
"The security environment confronting the United States today is radically different from what we have faced before. Yet the first duty of the United States Government remains what it always has been: to protect the American people and American interests. It is an enduring American principle that this duty obligates the government to anticipate and counter threats, using all elements of national power, before the threats can do grave damage. The greater the threat, the greater is the risk of inaction – and the more compelling the case for taking anticipatory action to defend ourselves, even if uncertainty remains as to the time and place of the enemy’s attack. There are few greater threats than a terrorist attack with WMD.
To forestall or prevent such hostile acts by our adversaries, the United States will, if necessary, act preemptively in exercising our inherent right of self-defense. The United States will not resort to force in all cases to preempt emerging threats. Our preference is that nonmilitary actions succeed. And no country should ever use preemption as a pretext for aggression."

I am truly shocked that you have the audacity to tell Iraqi's to "get civilized" considering the aforementioned.
I agree that this war was 100% entirely ill conceived, it was pushed *ON* 9/11/2001 and I've commented innumerable times on the illegitimacy of it, including providing links to excellent documentaries and other sources over the years. The idea of invading was also pushed to REAGAN by most of the same neo cons. Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Bush 1 and others. Reagan essentially laughed them out of office. They couldnt WAIT for a new chance IMHO.
NONE of that excuses the absolutely foolish and indefensible action that this reporter took when he let his personal anger at the idiot we know as Dubya, who also just happens to be holding one of the more important offices on the planet.
It's kinda that simple.
If this was fantasy world, I'd say rah rah too for slapping W with a size 12 or two also. I just happen to take it seriously thats all. Very un-GFY of me, but there ya go.
edit: oh and by the way, I'm not telling Iraqi's in some general sense to get civilized. I'm telling this reporter and other hot heads like him to think twice and react in an appropriate way when you're in the room with people who hold office such as visiting dignitaries and presidents and prime ministers, and oh by the way your OWN president.. I mean come on.
Just imagine some other hot head taking advantage of being in the same room.. except they had a bomb or a gun or a knife. Not trivial at all.Last edited by Tom_PM; 12-18-2008, 12:10 PM.43-922-863 Shut up and play your guitar.

Fuck, I would like to throw a shoe or two at him myself... or at least at all the people who actually voted for him a second time. However, the bottom line is that you don't do shit like that, and he needs to be punished. Jail? no. But some form of punishment. I say we make him live in Iraq, that oughta teach him.Comment

What if, what if, what if.... None of those things happened. He threw his shoes, and missed. No harm done. He's lucky to get 15 years in prison.
The ENTIRE problem with some people is they resort to personal violent acts instead of using proper means to the end they want.
What if that fucker was pissed and he had billions of dollars and tens of thousands of loyal to-the-death followers huh? What if instead of throwing shoes in a fit of anger, he launched some attack on ........ I dunno....... a couple of giant buildings full of thousands of innocent people?
Look, I'm against the Iraq war because it was all just a neo-con wet dream. But that doesnt mean all bets are off on civility and common sense. The dip shit was admitted to a room with the President of the United States and he fucking tried to inflict harm on the person currently holding that office!
He's EXTREMELY lucky to get 15 years in prison in his own country, IMHO.I'm just a newbie.Comment

He threw shoes at a War Criminal.
Did he have other ways of making a protest?
Does the media represent normal people ? The people who do the dying and the suffering?
Was the press conference vetted, the questions rigged and all prepared for another transmission of lies? And he a normal guy in the street risked his life to tell us ...no its not like that...
This guy is a hero ! Bush to Prison, put this guy in power...at least he is honest.Comment

If Iraq had invaded the US ( and finds WMDs !) and Saddam is holding a press conference and an American journalist stands up and throws his shoes at him....
How should he be punished?Comment
