I have a friend who once collected comics. He would only buy the foil/hologram ones, ones with bright and shiny covers. I think his most valuable comic was around a quarter less than what the comic cost to buy at the store. Ah... those were the days.
I loved the Punisher, I have the 1-5 mini series and 1-90 of the normal series, plus the war journals etc etc. I am always tempted to sell them, and then I remember the sotries everyone has about selling shit too early and all that.

If you're buying comics hoping they'll be worth some later, you're better off taking the money and putting it into a bank account. Or your mattress.
The majority of comics are worth less than the cover price the day they come out.
The reason older comics are valuable is because they didn't print many of them and many were not well preserved by their owners.
These days, print runs are much higher and companies offer multiple reprints.
If you *do* want to make money on comics, it's the newer issues, variant covers, etc. that turn the most profit. It's almost like the speculation market. Books come out, shoot up in price absurdly...then slide right back down never to come close to their peaks again.
Barring that, the only real money in comics comes from professionally graded comics, and they have to be Mint/Near Mint.
But I digress. I have exceeded my geek quotient for the hour.
hold on to them forever and give em to your grandkids, i woulda liked that, a nice framed spiderman #1 hanging on the wall. whoever was talking about the punisher mini series, you probably remember the covers, done by mike zeck, check out his interpertation of captain america if you can find it.

I have amazing spiderman #4. Any bidders? First appearance of the Lizard.
The most valuable comic I own is Action Comics #242, first appearance of Brainiac. I need to get it 'professionally' graded I guess... I would say it's worth around $1000 to $1200.
That's the cover of it (courtesy wikipedia).
After that I have no valuable comics at all lmao... next one after that is first apperance of Gambit in Uncanny X-Men #266. What a big jump in value eh?
