Jaywalking is a term used to describe when a pedestrian crosses a road illegaly, such as at the crosswalks of a signalized intersection. Jaywalking is illegal in some US jurisdictions, typically in urban areas where pedestrians are given preferential treatment at crosswalks, and in some other countries. In contrast, countries such as the UK do not generally give preferential right of way to pedestrians, instead relying on the common legal expectation that motorists must always give priority to pedestrians if necessary
