It does not stop the fact that search engines do scan the webpages and if there is no meta tags to grab the information from it will take what ever text there is on the webpage and insert it into it spider ! Don't you think such search engines need something to go by........ And you have many top spots... Is this by fluke? or is your search engine positions much lower?

Look Jace... any person can pick some obscure grouping of words and place them in their webpage or have hidden text or use some other spamming trick as to gain some temporary higher position with the search engines, but it does not last... I have personally looked at every method and tested it out for myself over a two year period... Besides buying traffic and or trying linking tricks or running a banner farm or paying a misc hacker for an odd jobs, it is almost impossible to get a decent rank within google through tricks or chance, never mind keeping such a position ... now the other search engines are a bit more easy to get listed in.

Since you have something to teach me perhaps you could explain just what your doing; because that would mean that I would not have to lift a finger or put any real effort into what I do for fun nearly every day!

You should quit before you make a complete ass of yourself... one does not need any meta tags to get great placements. And as far as what the search engines put in their listings, some use the meta tags, others don't. So going off saying that you need meta tags for great SEO is plain wrong.

Look guys... if you feel that you are getting great positions great... This started out by someone saying that Google and other search engines don't need meta tages... This is not actual fact... As I will say again the search engines need some actual information for their spiders... Where oh where do you think such information comes from? I would like to point out that the person I had started this "pull of words" with had a website marketing Search Engine Optimization as a service... If you speak to any pro about this they will tell you the same as I'm telling about SEO.

Now Tempest, Libertine and Jace you are the ones who are not reading what I'm posting and you are the ones who would like to have words and act like you know what your talking about when you all don't have a clue.

Now even though I think you all are jerks; I have to say that Jace your website is down with a 403 error. I would make a crack about how you 3 are pros and how well you work together, but I think your doing just fine on your own!

there are a couple of exceptions though when they are used, even by google....when you have a 100% graphics based site SE's will try and find page content, and if it only finds images it will use the meta info

You still can add imput text on the pictures. The SE will pick them up before that.

Benoit probably read some newbie SEO tutorials like spider-food and think he knows a lot about SEO like most newbs think they know a lot about the intraweb.

Dissing someone for not putting meta tags is just stupid.

As anyone with a clue knows it doesn't 'harm' to use metas and you may get a couple of hits from some obscure site that spiders and uses them - the relevant word there being just a few. Also sometimes handy when submitting a site to somewhere that goes fetches stuff like keywords for their own site search. But...

WTF though. To start screaming abuse at everyone who rightly says that metas are now virtually useless and of little or no help at all is scarily stupid.

yeah, but when the meta does come to be helpful though, is if you do have all images with text with the pics, but the SE"s are just pickking up that image text....sometimes it is nice to have the meta description filled out so you can choose what it picks up and places below the page title in the engine

but yeah, calling people names and throwing insults around over meta tags is pretty cheesy...haha

I find it a little strange that webmasters who spend a fair amount of time promoting their website(s) will not consider spending a few hours doing something very simple like SEOing there "business" website(s) but rather try to pick on something that is proven to be factual; even if its only a small improvement, but find plenty of time to tell others 100 reason why it can't work.

Look everyone I did not cover every point, I just wanted to say SEOing your website is a good idea because it helps with your search engine position.

I have to say my feeds are working now, but the segments are not no matter what segment I pick it still starts at the being of the movie.

I don't use meta tags anymore on my site and I know damn well what they do. I just don't bother.

Intelligent people beleive everything should be handed to them because they are smart. The truth is, with 50 % of work they can acheive as much as dumber people, but that 50 % of work will be harder to realize because we rely too much on our intelligence. Getting stuff done is what matters, not just what you know.

my ex business partner's aebn feeds have been off for a while. when he finally heard back from his rep, he was told management would be sending an explanation. when he pointed out he needed his feeds, he was told no one was compelled to remain with aebn :-/

If you read my post from when I came on to this thread I had pointed out that someone had advertised a Search Engine Optimizations service but did not see it realistic as to set an example of good form by spending just a few minutes to an hour or two as to make there own site SEOed.

I understand everyone has there own methods and thats fine with me however when people talk about Search Engine Optimization but they leave out things like meta tags, descriptions and keywords just for the sake of it and say it does not matter because the effect will be the same... this is a bit too much !!!

Everyone is saying for example that Google does not and has not used such meta tags for a longest time. I know for a fact that Google does use meta tags because I can find my keyword when I type them into Google and other search engines when doing keyword checks on my websites.

I would like to point out that I have tried to prove to myself that Google does not use meta tags; just to have such a powerful tool like Google not pick up relevant words; or that such words were, as you would say, too low in keyword density to really matter any, as to get an exceptable position within the search engines.

The problem I had, when I did not include meta tags etc.., was that my website(s) could not be found period; and as soon as I got it into my head the importance of having keywords and keyword density plus a few more easy things, that the SEO experts would say to do; I found that I had people coming to my websites and had a many top 10 positions within the main search engines that i submitted to.

I keep on getting very good search results with the keywords that I had chosen, and with so many positive search results, such speaks very loud to me !

Not having proper keywords etc.. just made it nearly impossible for anyone to get to my website though the search engines unless of course they typed your actual domain name into the search area and hit enter. This is providing that your website(s) were indexed to begin with.

If you don't define the words you would like others to use, to get to your website, how do you expect people to just come across your website(s) by the search engines?

There are search engines that don't spider your website, but they require you to still enter keywords and a description of your website for their index.

I would like to make it very clear to every webmaster here; if you don't SEO you website and your doing great, then you have some real business skills, ethics and staying power as to please your customers and or business associates, but this does not mean that such success stems from your webpage bringing in the sales, it just means that such webmaster/owners know how to please!!! by word of mouth, back links.. etc... I'm sure you get the idea...

Since a good reputation is everything in online business world; both word of mouth and good links back will make up for some of the websites that are not SEOed, however not everyone is capable of dealing well with others and relay very heavily on the search engines to drive around 80% of all business. { the stats are from a few years back }

My last remark on this post is that I was being very forwards and that It was not me who had started on others first; perhaps it does not matter to some here on this forum, but it takes me some time to reply like this, just to have some shit tell me everything I'm saying is useless because he or she read a book or two or had a website for a hundred years... I would not be suggesting things that I would not do myself so please people If you would like me to treat you all like pros then start showing some basic respect for the time it takes for me to respond to your questions and or remarks, and I will do the same.

Read it, read it again, then, when you're done, read it again another time, just for good measure. It won't make you an expert in SEO, but it will teach you the basics.

One final thing. Keywords and keyword density do matter, but they matter in the visible parts of the page (text, headings, title) and backlinks, not in the "keywords" meta tag. The major search engines figured out long ago that meta tags contain what the website owner wants to rank high for, not what the page actually contains. People spamming meta tags with keywords pretty much killed the relevancy of meta tags for the major search engines.
