If you know the city of the seller you may want to get the serial number and check with the local police if it was reported stolen. Also, pawn brokers take serial numbers and report it to a state database, you can check there as well.

I would worry more about getting fucked, than getting a stolen laptop...
just buy from reputable seller and you won't have to worry about details like that...
