wheres a nice but cheap city to live in?

Boston is way too expensive. A tiny 1 bedroom with rats in it is like $1,500/mo.

I need the diversity of NYC, the awesome subway system of Boston and the rental prices of like, fucking, Kentucky.
I don't care about weather or schools.

Hmmm Maybe DC or Chicago, those are good.

Ok nahhh, it isn't THAT bad. It is a beautiful state, and where I am, living is pretty damn cheap. But it's the politics I hate in Ky....... whew!!!

You won't find a much cheaper place than Ky to live in though, at least in Western Ky where I am.

I looked into that. Montreal would be perfect for me. It's like a mini-NYC but the beer is better.

However it's nearly impossible for a foreigner (me) to get a work permit there and I would be working there even if I'm working from home

Chicago is okay...

Indianapolis is nice but we don't have a subway...we drive everywhere cause the traffic isn't that bad. You can buy a 3,000 sq. ft. house in a 0 crime neighborhood for about $700/month. The cost of living is about half that of Boston...but you will make the same amount of money.

Ohio also has some nice cities...

Montreal is the way to go...
Toronto is too big, and there is no mountains around to snowboard.
Vancouver is pretty expensive and I found it boring when I lived there...the positive thing about it is that it's an hour away from paradise - Whistler-( which is out of price too)
Montreal is near some cool mountains, it's not too big (just the right size), it's fully bilingual (you could work in the english part of town easily..) and the rent is very reasonnable!
I think it is worth the try for a visa!

Kansas City MO is VERY cheap and a nice, pretty city. But it's sort of slow there and VERY far from the ocean. I'm on the other side of the state in St. Louis. Whatever you do, don't move here. There's a good chance you'll never get out, really. It's like some strange vortex or something.

I just moved from the Bay Area 2 months ago, moved to Fresno, Pay 1/3 the rent I was paying in Mountain View, in Fresno. I heard
on the radio the other day it's the cheapest
big city to live in.

I think I've got you all beat in many ways. Winnipeg is centrally located, the cost of living is half of the best listing on this thread, the U.S. dollar is worth $1.50 Cdn, and a NICE one-bedroom here is $450-$550 per month Cdn, or about $300 per month U.S. The crime rate here is quite low, we get less than 20 murders here per year, the city has close to 700,000 people so it's not too big yet big enough to have everything one could want. One of the finest beaches in the world for summer (Grand Beach), and the only possible headache is the snow and cold winter.

I pay $165 per month in property tax for my home, and I'm 3 minutes from downtown and the Forks Market etc. You can buy a decent home here in some okay neighborhoods for $50k - $70k, and again all this is in CANADIAN FUNDS, so divide by 1.5 to find out the cost in U.S. money.

Since all my income now comes in U.S. currency, I AM truly laughing all the way to the bank. Ucan2. Bring a shovel.
