Pornographers and casino guys can't do it because we'd go to jail. Too late to do it now because the ression is going to kill consumer spending, but if you had something profitable enough there was a time when you might have been able to make money that way, I don't know, I've never looked in to it at all.
I was always surprised that I never got much general advertising for online stuff. I mean I always get tons of shit for industry stuff, but that's because I'm on lists all over the damn place. I always thought it was a market that hadn't been exploited. I kind of assumed that some folks tried it and just couldn't get the numbers to work. We certainly get enough of the shit from every brick and mortar business on earth. You'd assume that some wise online people would be able to make it work for them too.
AOL made a killing doing this, obviously. They had a service was very expensive and very profitable, and they did it at the exact right time, but they made fucking billions and it was all from snail mail spam.
