wow you lived in SA I used to live in Florida in SA..
anyway when we lived in Southampton there was always a guy with his dog who would sit outside of the shops with a blanket trying to sell a magazine called The Big Issue to make a few bucks. We would always buy him and his dog food and he gladly accepted it.
We got pretty freindly with the guy and used to always stop and talk to him. He was only 26 years old and just got himself into a lot of crap, he just disapeared and we never saw him again , just hope he pulled himself together and sorted his life out..
